Yes sir, a real man's tach. Mechanical!

I didn't know that the ones on these trucks were mechanical. I always though they were electric. Last one I had was a StewartWarner in my V8 pinto in mid 70's.

That cluster came from a truck with a diesel engine. The tach has to be cable driven since diesels have no distibutors. The cluster looks nice. I guess you could always get an old gas engine Corvette distibutor to hook the tach to but with only 4K on the dial it would get pegged all the time.

Diesel engines? Did they just come with special order/dealer options?

I am not a big truck (C-40/60) expert so I just guessed it was a diesel due to the low red-line. It could be that a 305/351 V6 or a tall deck big block (366/427) used a mechanical drive tach. Anybody know for sure?

You can get a mechanical tach drive distributor and tach still in the aftermarket with a 10,000 rpm scale, or more.

JJR, it could have been either a Detroit Diesel or a 366/427. They both red lined below 4,000, and were cable driven. I wonder what Teeitup has in mind for it??!!

I still have a couple of tach drive distributers laying around from my early corvette days, never knew they were in trucks too.

My VETTE still has the Mech Tach drive dist. I just recently installed An electronic ignition KIT and shelved the points. Best thing I ever done. When I bought my truck A year ago the first MOD I did was remove the points dist (trahed it) and installed An HEI.
