What do I need to know before replacing my Steering gear box?
Hello all,
I know the gearbox is bad, and I want to replace it. I've been looking around for more info on how to do it. What special tools do I need. E.g. pitman arm puller What should I replace along with it? (I'm already going to replace the pitman arm, idle arm, both tierods inner and outer) like are there any seals and whatnot. What do I torque the bolts to? Tips and tricks? Any info would help Thanks, zdbleam |

You may not need the pitman arm puller, because you can actually remove the gearbox and pitman arm together if you are replacing both. You'll need some power steering fluid obviously to refill the system.
Remove the front wheel, and there are 3 22mm bolts holding the gearbox to the frame. They are tapered so getting them into the new box is pretty easy. An impact wrench is nice to have for this job but I've done it without it. Remove the steering shaft, check the rag joint. It's probably worn but some are still in good shape. Do the Jeep steering shaft conversion if you can. I believe the torque on the gearbox bolts is 85-90 ft/lbs. Might be more, potentially up to 125 ft-lbs. If I think of anything else I'll let you know.

Just did it and it is pretty straightforward as sntrym95 said. Hardest part was just holding the box in place with one hand and starting the first bolt with the other. Box is heavy laying on your back. Make sure you have socket for the pitman nut. It is pretty large. No other surprises.
I would check that rag joint or just plan on replacing it now. I made the mistake of not and had to go back in and replace it. |

The rag joint replacement is Lares 205. That was the only replacement joint I found when I was looking. It fit perfectly.

Try the Jeep shaft conversion. It takes so much slop out of the steering. You will be amazed.
