60-63 Windshield install
How hard is it to install a 60-63 wrap around windshield? I have called some local shops and no one wants to do it. Any of you Bay Area members know of a shop that int installs them ?
I know John (ChiefRocka)needs his replace his too, any tips ?

Re: 60-63 Windshield install
It is the most difficult design I have ever encountered. I've installed dozens of windshields in vehicles from the 40's to the 60's, and my 1960 GMC was the only one I could not accomplish.
I painted the cab with all the glass out, and then figured I'd reinstall the original glass (it had a few chips) to see if I could do it at all, then pull it back out and install the new glass if it worked okay. Ultimately I fractured the original glass at one of the bigger chips, so I gave up and called a local glass outfit to install the new windshield. The first day they sent two guys, and after several hours of struggling, gave up and came back the next day with a third guy. They finally got it installed, and said they would never do another one "next time call somebody else". For most installs on this style of glass (like a 56 Ford for example), the process is: 1. Mount the rubber on the glass. 2. Install rope/string/twine in the pinch weld cavity in the rubber. 3. Set the assembly on the lower pinch weld and start working the lip into the cab by pulling on the string, with someone else pushing on the outside. The problem is, when you set the assembly on the lower pinch weld, the top of the glass/rubber gasket interferes with the lip of the roof, and you can't lay the glass back against the channel. This leaves the option of setting the glass & gasket against the face of the channel and attempting to pull the gasket lip over the pinch weld, when it's too far away to reach the pinch weld. I was at work the days they did the installation, so I don't know how they finally got it done. I asked my wife to video tape the process but they refused to do the job if she did. Perhaps if you can find an older established glass outfit that has someone with experience. Good luck. |

Re: 60-63 Windshield install
i took mine to shop.mine is extra hard to do because it has the stainless steel trim.they said that they have done lots of old cars and i check with some coustomers of his. he supplied the glass and i supplied the gasket . i went the cheaper route and got it from brothers. after 4 hours the gave up and said the gasket did not fit right. then i got rubber gasket steele rudder or it was soft seal..the next trip took about 4 hours useing four guys. they beat and framed on the windshield i just knew they were going to brake it,i watched both times.they said it was the hardest one they have ever done.the total cost was $290.00 plus the gasket.i got a deal.nothing like a new windshield.

Re: 60-63 Windshield install
You might check with Safelite Glass if you have one close to you. They're a nationwide chain. Before I painted my 63 I was thinking of taking the windshield out to put in new rubber. Around the same time I had a windshield crack on my DD truck. Safelite came out and installed the new one and while the guy was here I showed him my 63 and asked him if they did these. He said they did, same price as newer cars ($125) if I supplied the rubber. One hitch was that if it wasn't a new glass bought from them, there was no guarantee it wouldn't break. That's why I didn't do it. But, this guy had done plenty of old vehicles and said it would most likely be no problem.

Re: 60-63 Windshield install
I think another thing to watch for is making sure the rubber is installed facing the right way out
It will install backwards but mine started to develop spiral cracks radiating from the middle of the windshield Didn't trust the quality of that one(unk brand) so sprung for a GM resto part, about 35$ I thought my search for new glass was going to be tough and expensive (with catalog $$ being 1000-1300 usd,no shipping,no install and I've heard rumor they don't fit very well). My local shop found a pilkington in BC 650.00 I wasted no time"I'LL take it" it was kind of funny,He even checked twice 'cuase he thought it was a typo Install took 2 guys about 2 hrs T

Yes....let me know what you find. I want to retain the chrome strip for sure.....although, I want to remove the glass myself, and repair (if any) rust under the rubber...

Re: 60-63 Windshield install
I thought that the rubber was supposed to be put on the glass, then put a rope in the pinch well side of the rubber, then as you pull the rope from the inside the rubber flips over the pinch well. I will have to photo the instructions out of my assembly manual, but I think that was the way it went.

Re: 60-63 Windshield install
Anyone find putty under the windshield seal? It did make it easier to remove as the putty caused the seal to get soft, but this is the first time I've seen that

Re: 60-63 Windshield install
My wife and I put a new windshield in my truck a couple of years ago with the 1960 stainless trim strip. We used tons of lubricant on the gasket and it fundamentally popped right into place.

Re: 60-63 Windshield install
Succesfully replaced the windshield yesterday. Took an hour and a half to get it seated in properly and another 2 hours to clean all the sealant up. Used 3m 08509, would have been a little quicker but started with the rope at the bottom and had to start over since the roof overhang gets in the way. I replaced the windshield because the one that was in there was delaminating just noticed today that it has no markings on it at all. The replacement is marked DOT AS1, $105.00 at the local glass dealer.
Thanks for the links and all |

You paid only $105 for a '60-'63 windshield?

Re: 60-63 Windshield install
Actually mine is a 65, didn't have my glasses on when I first posted to this thread but yes that is what it cost. I thought I'd be paying more from what I had seen online, only went to the local glass dealer because I live on a rural route and most freight trucks can't get up my road.
