Automatic Transmissions Trouble TH350

I was stopped in "D" yesterday and I could hear a light, metalic scraping noise from under the cab. I put it in park or neutral, it stopped. Any gear foward or reverse, I hear the noise, but only at a stop. As soon as I start rolling it's gone. So I get under the truck and I can see two problems: First there is no cover over the torque converter- there's supposed to be one, right? Second, I can see an uneven row of little knicks on the torque converter. What's up here? I haven't enrolled in the transmission class yet so I have very little experience here. Makes me shy about drining the thing at all. Appreciate some help ASAP!

Well, I've been running without that cover for years now. I was too lazy to put it back on and now I think I've lost it.

But, anyway. Maybe you got something stuck up in there?

i haven't run a converter cover in years also, check to see that the bolts going thru the flexplate(flywheel) into the converter are tight and also the bolts holding the tranny to the engine are tight

Because of the irregular pattern, I'm inclined to think a bolt got loose or I picked up some debris.

You may want to check the flexplate also. I have seen them crack around the mounting bolts where it attaches to the crankshaft and also where the converter bolts to it. Usually it will make more of a knocking or rattling sound but it can cause the converter to not line up properly in the front pump bushing and make funny noises if it's cracked around the converter mounting bolts. Not easy to check, and it's hard to see up in there but worth a shot. Unbolt the converter, slide it back and get a flashlight and mirror roll the engine my hand and give it a good look see.

Turns out that the torque converter was bad. Since the tranny is the original from '69, I decided to just dump it and put the 700r4 in it. Which brings me to the next question. Does anyone make a column indicator which shows the correct gears for these trucks with the overdrive tranny in it?

If you have a tilt column you can use the indicator that Flaming River puts in their tilt columns. Those columns look like an exact copy of a truck tilt and they offer them with an indicator for OD. My buddy 65streetcruiser put a 72 tilt column in his 65 and a 700R4. He ordered an indicator from Flaming River, on the box is written Part No. FR20010LNO. It bolted right in and looks stock except it has a position f/ OD. Don't know about the non tilts though, they are different.
