Relocating fuel tank, what to do with old filler neck hole?

I ordered a Boyd in-frame fuel tank today, because I just really don't like the idea of a 17 gallon fuel-air bomb right behind me, nor the gassy smell around the cab.

The truck has already been painted, and I'd rather not leave a gaping hole for water to get into . I'm sure a patch can be welded in and blended, but I'd rather not do that until everything else is done. Does anyone leave a dummy filler neck and cap either for convenience or appearance?

The in-cab tank was installed in the truck before I bought it, but had never had gas in it until a few weeks ago. I'd rather not carve up a perfectly good new tank for the dummy filler neck. Anyone have an old tank they'd be willing to chop the neck off and donate/sell me?

Put a spring loaded beer sleeve in place with a door, better yet make it cooled with ice! Oh man I think I'm on to something here......open the door , a cold beer pops out...wow, perfect for attending truck/car shows.Who knows you might get a trophy for that ...

GENIUS! Have to think about how that'll work. Might have to use the small 6oz beer cans, but still...

ive see where someone cut a filler neck off and made several cuts on the neck part spead the fingers out to secure the neck to the cab and left it like a dummy filler neck. just don't ever lend your truck out. they might try and put gas in the dummy filler neck!! lol

Yeah, I think I'd put a plug in there, so they'd maybe get an ounce of gas in before it overflowed the filler neck. Otherwise, "Damn! This thing holds a lot of gas. 470 gallons, so far!"

I was planning to do the same, I like the stock look and if the next owner wants to weld a patch, let them.

Add a locking gas cap and you're done.

There is a cool thing someone makes and sells that puts a filler neck back on and you can put a locking gas cap on and lock items in there. Kinda cool.

Any chance you have the name or a link? That'd be awesome.

Re: Relocating fuel tank, what to do with old filler neck hole?

According to the LMC catalog, the '67-'71 trucks without EEC use the same gas cap as the '60-'66 trucks. That would lead me to believe the fuel filler necks are probably the same 2" diameter. The '60-'66 has an intermediate section of hose (#6) between the fuel filler neck (#5) and the tank.

Looks like that the fuel filler neck from the '60-'66 could be used. Put a plug in it, epoxy it into the '67-'72 grommet, add a locking gas cap lid, and Bob's your uncle.

Re: Relocating fuel tank, what to do with old filler neck hole?

You could rig up a "Karma Tank"...you know, a fake tank in the cab full of light yellowish colored kool-aid for those that tend to need your gas more than you. No need to spend the extra money on a locking gas cap.

When moved my tank, I cut the filler neck off. I have seen where people used the space to french in an antenna that goes up and down as the radio is turned on and off.

I welded in a piece of 18 gauge, once I did and got the truck together wished I didn't. The old filler neck looked kinda cool but I thought smooth it up

Keep looking. Someone posted a bolt in solution some time ago just for the reason you want one. Don't remember who at this time though.

I cut off the neck from the old in cab tank. I'm sure you could do the same thing without having to weld. It's going to be fun going to shows with no cap and just a shop rag in there. HaHa.

Re: Relocating fuel tank, what to do with old filler neck hole?

Here's what I did as a temporary solution. A short piece of PVC pipe fits the grommet nicely with a collar on the inside.. Outside is the bottom of a beer can glued to the PVC pipe.

Love the shop rag idea!! My truck has a leftover saddle tank filler in front of the passenger rear wheel well. Think I'm going to have to put a shop rag in it!

Gonna go with a slightly different approach. My friend (still) smokes. We'll be standing there casually talking to someone, he'll open the gas cap and toss the cigarette in there. Much freaking out should ensue

Re: Relocating fuel tank, what to do with old filler neck hole?

I had cut the neck off. then put some screws in the side so it wont some out. with the cap on and when someone tries to unscrews it the whole than turns and don't come off.

Re: Relocating fuel tank, what to do with old filler neck hole?

Im going to put a Dummy filler neck in mine , the cap will be installed and then the tube/pipe will be filled with spray foam before installation and then a rubber cap on the end inside the cab .

Re: Relocating fuel tank, what to do with old filler neck hole?

I did a real simple and easy fix. Took the gas cap and tack welded a 1/4"-20 bolt to it. Just put it up to the rubber grommet, installed washers and double-nutted it on inside. Done! The only thing is that the cap isn't sticking out farther because there's no filler neck. Maybe some day I'll smooth out the hole, but for now its good.
