Carb

Any recommendations on what type of Edelbrock carburetor to use on my 72 Cheyenne. 1405, 1407... Not sure which one to use? I think I had a Rochester installed. I had it rebuilt and one backfire later I'm fighting a fire. I was told to just try a new carburetor instead of having it rebuilt again, any thoughts rebuild or replace? Thanks in advance for your help.

I have a 1405 on my stocker 350. Been going strong since new 9 or so years with ethanol fuel. I have heard the new AVS series have better metering so influencing atomization or some other technical crud.

Seriously they work, either way. Bolt and go if everything else in your engine is set up properly. They do take a minor amount or adjusting but the guys on their technical site or phone are more than willing to help. I got mine dial to a tee by vac guage.

There are any number of reasons for an engine to backfire. Carburetors are only one cause. Any carb could have a fire after a backfire. I would find the cause of the backfires before I did a carb swap. It is likely you would add to your problem instead of solving it.
Was the rebuilding of the existing carburetor done by an experienced Quadrajet professional?

Agree with HO455. Figure out what is wrong with your current setup instead of changing things and throwing parts at it.

I run a Edelbrock 1406, it has electric choke, I have had good luck with these on other trucks as well,and they are easy to rebuild

Was the timing changed? That would’ve been my first guess as to a backfire cause. If it was running fine (?) and absolutely nothing was done other than to remove the carb - get it rebuilt by someone - and then reinstall, I’d be on the horn to that special someone. If the rebuilder also removed and reinstalled, I’d be on the horn even quicker...

I say a 1406 or a 1906. You'll also need either a fuel pressure regulator set to 5.5 psi or Edelbrock's fuel pump because they flood with more pressure than that. Also need a heat insulating gasket to stop fuel percolation.

Backfiring from the carb is a timing issue. Backfiring from the exhaust is a rich mixture issue.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't have any timing issues that I know of. I stopped driving the truck because it was leaking fuel and the performance was no longer there. I wasn't driving crazy just driving. I parked the truck for months until I tried a guy named Randy on the rebuild. I installed it and busted it over a few times. I think I may have used a small amount of gas to get it to start.(Then the fire)

I spoke with a shade tree mechanic and he recommended that I buy a new carburetor since my old one was involved in a fire. If I decide to rebuild again can some recommend a professional? Thanks again.

I put a 1406 on my '70 350. Runs great and carb needed only small adjustments to choke and high idle
