How Much Oil in a 250 Inline 6?

Did some google searching and couldn't seem to find any answers. I don't know where the Chilton's manual we have is as it got lost in the recent move. So if anyone could tell me real quick how much oil to put into the Inline 6 I would really appreciate it.

6 quarts if you run a full size filter. 5.5 if you run a shorty.

Re: How Much Oil in a 250 Inline 6?

Another question if you don't mind, my truck is idling really low, and it will idle at that low RPM for a little while and eventually die. It never did this until recently. My guess is the idle screw has backed out some. I check the fuel filter and lines and fuel is getting to the engine fine with no lack of fuel. Where is the idler screw located on a 1 bbl Rochester Monojet? I can't seem to find it. Unless it's on the dark side closer to the firewall. I guess I'll grab a flashlight...

Re: How Much Oil in a 250 Inline 6?

As per my original owners manual on my 69 and 68 and 65-72 Chiltons.

Five quarts with a filter change.

Idle adjust screw is on the firewall side of the carb. You access it from the passenger's side.

Re: How Much Oil in a 250 Inline 6?

One more thing, these little carbs are notorious for leaking gaskets. Make sure the bottom is tight and in mine I had a loose base. I found it by actually removing it and accessing the screws from the bottom.

Good pics on this site. You can see the idle adj screw next to the bellcrank #44.

Re: How Much Oil in a 250 Inline 6?

Shrugging my shoulders. I changed the oil in my 250 earlier this week. First time, I used a long filter and it took 6 to get it to the full mark. I ran the engine awhile and changed it again. This time I used a short filter and it took 5.5 quarts.

Maybe our oil pans are deeper in Texas. Everything else is bigger.

Re: How Much Oil in a 250 Inline 6?

Re: 6 quarts. The books say that with long or high capacity filter add 2 quarts. Could be the the dipstick is a little off. Mine is pretty much on the money with the recommended 5 quarts-maybe a smidgen low.

The 292, 305 (v6), 351 (v6) use 5 without the filter with 1 quart more for filter change.

Do you have a 250 or 292 oil pan?

Re: How Much Oil in a 250 Inline 6?

My 292 takes 5 qts with filter IIRC. I guess the answer is buy 6, use 5, run, check, add as needed.

What year big block? Mine only takes 5 with a filter change. Maybe the dipstick is wrong, somehow?

Every big block I’ve ever had took 6 qts. I’ve had early 396’s - 90’s 454’s and pretty much everything in between.

Re: How Much Oil in a 250 Inline 6?

That's something I'll have to check into. I'll start with the length of the dipstick tube after I change the oil and verify the amount required. It's due for a change, anyway.
