Does anyone know how to adjust the top clam door. Mine is stiff to close.

If you find out, PLMK. Mine is very stiff to open. I don't think it is opening all the way either.

Found out you can use 1955-1957 nomads rear brackets to.hold the upper clam door open

I thought that might be possible.
Before i found replacements for my non-catching upper slides I bought a Danchuk Mfg. repair kit for nomad slides. I didnt get around to trying the kit, but i think it would work to fix intact non working slides.

if the pivot pin in the hinge is bent or worn the door will be hard to open.
one of mine is bent slightly (from backing into a pole with the end gate up), lubing it helps. also be sure the slides are lubed.

I recently had my rear window out, i was surprised how light and easy to open the upper gate was without glass in it. if i every need to replace it i will get some light weight lexan or plexiglass.

the 1963 shop manual has instructions to adjust the hinge to center and flush the door to the body. I think your door would have to be way out of adjustment to make it stiff to close. maybe you have too thick weatherstripping or its placed wrong?

one issue would be the bottom bracket needs to slitly modified. I purchased a set on ebay for 89. hoping to have them by monday

no weather-stripping on the clam doors.. but ill try the pin idea tonight.

two style of nomads had them.. one is short the other long. I bought the wagon one. just came in. ill take a look at it when I get home

I am converting my hatch to struts. Does anybody know what the thread size is for the embedded nuts in the side of the hatch? I tried 1/4-28 which doesn’t seem to work.

Yep - 55-57 Nomad supports are definitely too short. They only came in one length - not a long or short.

you might be right. but in my case it better than nothing. I might need to change the mounting holes to make it work. or extension on it. ive seen on facebook someone selling brackets to use gas assist on them.

Hi:

There is a great post in the 60-66 Suburban forum on a gas assist installation. I basically copied the brackets shown in the post, and bought a couple of struts. The only wrinkle for me was that the struts were too short to open the hatch all the way, so I ordered longer ones. Pretty easy mod.

another alternative if you don't want to do gas shocks is camper shell end gate support slides.
before 2001 when i got my first computer I thought endgate slides were made of unobtainium I used a 2x4 or a pole to hold my endgate open.

One day I was in the wallyworld RV section and found a set of slides in a discount bin for $1.99, the end brackets had to be replaced with those from my original slides and the slide was about one inch shorter then the originals, but they worked well for 2 years until i went over a speed bump too fast with the end gate up and one slide "folded". I went back to walmart and they had a set on the regular shelf for $19.99. i bought those and they have been used on my truck for almost 20 years now.

to eliminate the end gate from crashing down and folding again i drilled a hole in the slide and secure it with a nut and bolt when i want to leave the end gate up while driving.
