Wont start...
I have a 71 with 307. I have upgraded to an HEI, has stock alternator with external voltage regulator. Truck has ran great for 5 years on set up, driving to work it just shut off. Cranks I don't seem to be getting any spark. Where do I check first? Could it be voltage regulator?

Re: Wont start...
Sounds to me like your HEI ignition module. That's exactly what happened to me about a year ago. If you keep trying, you may find that it'll suddenly start and run fine, and then you'll shut it off and it won't start again. Those modules can be had on eBay or amazon for $10, but I opted for a genuine Delphi part for $25. The hard part is climbing over the engine to swap it out. Moving blankets help.

Re: Wont start...
$50 buys a brand new Chinese HEI. New module, new coil, new cap and rotor. You can't buy the tune-up kit for that price. Replace them all, check the wiring and move on to the next project.

Check to see if you have power to the ignition when cranking and in the "on" position. Did you run a dedicated wire with 12V to the distributor, or are you going through the stock harness with the resistance wire?

Before you start throwing parts to solve the problem. Verify that you actually don't have spark and then make sure you have a good 12v supply at the hei.
Then if still no spark I would swap out module Mark Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Wont start...
Wanted to thank everyone who helped. It was the distributor. I bought another ebay special dropped it in and it fired right off. Obviously the quality of these are low, I only got 40000 miles out of the last one, but when they are $35 hard not to buy another.
