What’s the very easiest fuel neck filler location

I’m looking to do the under bed relocation this summer.. in terms of ease of installation and ease of filling, what’s the best location for a filler neck? Side fill or top fill? Thanks!

Re: What’s the very easiest fuel neck filler location

Well I'd say they are as follows...

For ease of installation= hole directly in the bed floor, and directly over the filler hole in the tank. Top filler tank required.

For ease of filling with fuel= side of the bed, like 99% of all newer cars. Side fuel filler tank required.

Our old blue has a blazer filler.
Fills perfectly, needs a hole in the bed side.

Top fill sucks. If you don't want to deal with gas wanting to dribble out the nozzle every time you fill up go with side fill. I've never done a rear tank, but if I did I would go with a Blazer or Suburban filler. That's what GM would have done.

The top fill , All the side fills I've seen require notching the frame and cutting into the bedside or a tali light slow fill . filling the top fill is not any harder then filling the tank on a Harley , You don't want fuel dribbling on your bikes paint either .

Side fill, drivers side behind the marker light. Not my truck in the pic and on this particular truck the fill was put on the passenger side.

Re: What’s the very easiest fuel neck filler location

My Corvette is top fill, and that's the factory location. I don't find it any harder than any other fill location, but I do occasionally spill a drop or 2 on the paint, but I always have spray detailer in the car, so to me it's no big deal, I just wipe it off right there on the spot.

Re: What’s the very easiest fuel neck filler location

Side fill can be done w/o cutting the frame, same as K/5s and Suburbans. I fill my Harley and it's a lot more involved than side fill. I take my shades off, stand as close to the bike as possible so as to not be reaching and be looking straight into the tank to avoid overfilling. And it's no more than 5 gallons, so pretty quick. I have spilled a few times and had to scramble for the windshield squeegee (if they have one) to at least splash water on the bike and wipe with a rag. No place to carry detailer. The factory still does side fill, always have. Trucks aren't Vettes. Trucks are practical, Vettes are exotic cars. There are compromises in practicality and the race car style filler is one. In HS I pumped gas. I filled a Vette very carefully. Never let any part of the nozzle touch the car except the tip on the filler rim. The guy gets out, takes a driving glove off, wipes a spot as if he was feeling a scratch and drove off w/o paying. I wonder where he got that idea from. He was escorted back to the station to pay by the police. Cutting the side is necessary. If you don't plan on leaving the tank in the rear, eliminating the need for the side fill in the bed, you should just leave the tank in the stock place. And... how do you do top fill w/o cutting a hole in the bed floor? Rear tank is a modification isn't it? Where do you draw the line? And pick your poison, hole in bedside or hole in floor? Either one can be repaired.

Re: What’s the very easiest fuel neck filler location

My set up is some what akin to that of Furno6820 style. Works fine, rather easy to do and fills quickly with no back flow. Can still carry items in the bed floor. Get a few strange looks at the gas station, has started more than a few conversations.

I put a 70 blazer side fill in my 67 K10. Used a graft from the blazer for the outside of the bed. I have no slow fill problems. I also like the look of the filler tube.

I have the piece from inside a Blazer and want to put the fill behind the marker light. Could you post some pics inside and out side the box of your filler.

Re: What’s the very easiest fuel neck filler location

I went with a Tanks Inc rear mount tank for a Ford Mustang. It is 15 gallons, comes with the proper 90 ohms fuel sender and was very low cost to do. I added a Yogis magnetic fill door and a cap that has a pushin so I do not have to remove cap to put gas in. Did not have to cut the frame super easy to mount and the plus is I don't see it hanging down in the back.

There is not an easy answer -

It is up to you and how will you use you truck most of the time. if you tend to haul a lot with a full loaded bed then having a filler inside the bed will not be a good thing,to gain access. You may need to have a filler on the side of the bed. Yet here is mine, right smack in the middle lol.

Re: What’s the very easiest fuel neck filler location

The question is what is easier, not what do you prefer, what is coolest looking, what is best, or anything else. It is easiest to walk up to the side of your truck, twist the cap off, and pump gas w/o opening anything or reaching over anything. We all have our opinion, but that is what is easiest.

I used a fuel inlet set up from an early 90's Chevy Lumina but think pretty much any fuel filler could be adapted to work. One larger fill hose, one vent line from the fill housing that runs along the left side wheel well tub. The third hose is a vent hose that runs from the tank vent up along side the inner wheel well housing also. I attached the vent lines using existing wheel well housing bolt holes and small Adel clamps. Think it helps when filling at full tilt with no back flow or slow fill issues. Small bit of creative brazing to get the correct curved flow to the neck fill was involved but really pretty easy. Used a copper plumbing elbow for a 90 degree turn that I needed. Hope that helps.
