Exhaust system question

Hi everyone. Been a long time since I've own one of these, like 25 years. Picked up a 72 C10 with a 350 in it a little over a year ago. A few weeks back it developed an exhaust leak on the drivers side pipe. PO seems to have put duels on it. Anyway, I took the pipe loose today and looks like the donut gasket is none existent anymore.

My question is according to the 72 service manual I have. It shows an extension in the pipe that seems to hold the gasket in place. This part was not there when I disassembled it. I would assume this part needs to be there?? Any advise would be appreciated, Thx

Re: Exhaust system question

They come with a short piece of pipe that fits snugly inside the donut. I used to make them by cutting a short piece off of an exhaust pipe tubing. That keeps the exhaust flame off the donut. Chevy dealers have an iron donut that stands up better.
