Dash speaker grille

Hey guys,

How would you recommend cleaning this up?

And

How would you replace this mounting screw? It's so small in not sure I can tack it. JB WELD something in?

Re: Dash speaker grille

I don't think it is a screw - it is just a bare stud that a little star fastener holds to. But I replaced mine with a screw anyway

I didn't have this bottom trim piece, and the original one I found off the internet looked worse than yours - it was missing two fasteners.

I took mine to the glass beader to roughen up the surface of the stainless and remove as much rust as I could from the steel backer. I filled the space between the steel backer and the stainless trim with JB weld and potted a #8 screw in it

To make sure it was in the right position, I put a piece of tape on the radio grill to keep the JB weld off of it and clamped the trim to the grill to let it set up.

Here it is after the JB weld set up

The outside after polishing

For the grill itself, I bought some of the newer methylene chloride free paint stripper and was pleasantly surprised how well it worked. Took two rounds of stripper then glass beader to get the multiple paint layers off.
