later year q'jets any good?

I am thinking of getting a pre-electronic q'jet (1980) from a 454 and trying it on my 402. Are these any better than the earlier years' ones? Are these the 800 CFM (1 7/32" primary bores) ones?

I am running a 79 small block unit on my 350 and it is great. The latest non electronic q-jets are the most refined, have electric chokes, can be tuned for the best economy and the best drivability.

We have an electric choke model Q-jet on my son's truck. It is a 79 or 80 and it works really well. The choke is never an issue.

The biggest difference between the older and newer Q jets is that the newer ones are jetted/set up for less emmisions. The older ones also have more fuelk capacity in the bowl but the newer ones can be made to hold more by taking out the black plastic peice(round and hollow) from the float bowl and get a lot of it back. The newer carb will have a lot more vacuum lines to plug off to but thats no big deal.

800 CFM carbs came on (I think) 454's exclusively later on. Chances are, if you find a qjet, it'll be 750 CFM which is more than enough for everything but the hairiest of 402's. on super duty pontiacs and certain chevies (I can't remember which ones). A quick way to tell if you have a 750 or 800 CFM qjet is that the primary venturies will be 1-2/32 inches on the 750 and 1-7/32 on the 800

I have a couple of 800CFM Q-Jets that I took off of Caddys. They have electric chokes and P\S fuel inlet. I am going to rework them and put one on the truck the other on the Burb. Somewhere I have a pic looking down the primaries that shows the difference between the 750's and 800's, I just can't seem to find it right now.

My 85 Came with a non electronic Q-Jet it works great compared to older ones i have had Push the pedal once in the morning so the choke flap will close and it starts right up idles high untill its warm PERFECT> and better gas mileage than the edelbrock i tryed.

Well then I guess I have nuthin' to lose. I tried an E'brock (AFB) carb once. Big POS! The rebuilds I am not wild about, E'brock Q'jet carbs are too x-pensive, a Holley is out of the question an a Jet might be good but still over 3 hundred bones!
I'll give it a whirl.
