Kugel, CPP, or Lokar shift linkage?
I've been looking at these 3 different column linkages for my 700r4, to replace the previous garbage rigged to work by the PO. Does anyone have any first hand experience with any of these? Are there any advantages of 1 over the others? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

They are essentially all the same thing. The one CPP sells is Kugel Komponents in fact. My firsthand experience with it is no complaints. Easy to install an dial in.

Thanks for the help guys, it's much appreciated! cdowns I agree they are threaded rods with "ends" but I'd think those "ends" and shift arm bracket are the most critical parts in reference of binding, wear, and overall durability.

I'm having a helluva time putting my Lokar kit in. I've got a 700R4 behind a 402 and the rod doesn't seem quite long enough. Tough to line up the column indicator with the actual position as well. Have you looked at the cable ones?

I'm not concerned with the indicator on the column as I have the correct lettered font to lay out on the acrylic lense after I get the linkage. It allows me to adjust the font to the indicator, and not the indicator to the font. I will NOT use a cable linkage. It's too over priced for less than precise shift detents.

Kugel for me. I also used a metal coat hanger to create a pattern.

Did you put the linkage on your 72? I have a 6L80 and the only variable is the trans lever going on with the slotted part that the lever slides onto. CPP doesn't have a tested kit but the model CPTSL looks like it would fit. CPP doesn't know if the rod would be long enough. Current rod is only four inches away from tip of OEM lever.

I installed a CPP/Lokar shift linkage for my TH350. The rod in the kit was too short, so I picked up a zinc plated 5/16"x36" rod from Lowes for $4.68 (Item #44394) and threaded one end with a 5/16-24 die. I plan to replace the existing rod with a stainless one that has threads on both ends and eliminate the rod coupling with the set screws.

If you get the CPP kit, download or at least look at the polar instructions on line. Basically the same parts but way easier to understand.

Years ago I used Kugel to put a 700R in a 2DW 72 Blazer. My old guy memory is they sold a short linkage for cars and a longer one for pickups.
I had moved the factory linkage to fit the new trans and when in low gear the shift lever was aimed too low (4 o clock or lower) and it felt like some minor binding when shifting. Kugel linkage worked perfectly for years. |
