I think I found my timing problem.
I started getting into the distributor tonight and look what I found when I removed the rotor.
The second and third pictures show the one weight pin out of the hole. Not sure how this happened. I am pretty damn sure this didnt happen when I removed the rotor. Plus the pin has little teeth on it that did not want to go back into the hole. The first picture shows how the little plate in the middle is raised on one side (arrow) and not the other. It was like this at first, then it got a little worse as I tried to tap that pin back into place. When I got the pin back in I put the weight and springs back into place and placed the rotor back on top and just snapped it by hand and it wasnt very quick to respond. I took the rotor back off and played with it by hand. It was slow and not smooth at all. There is a lot of resistance when turning by hand. The weight that was out of place doesnt slide smoothly across the plate the weights sit on. What do you guys think, do you think this would cause the problems I was having?

Yes, that's your problem for sure. I'm afraid the Proform has kicked the bucket. Time to start thinking about getting another distributor.

The slugishness with the weghts off when you try to turn the advance shaft is a gummed up shaft. The oild fumes and heat have caused a residue to form inbetween the inner and outer shafts. Drive the roll pin out of the gear at the bottom and you can take it appart and clean it.
The pin could be tacked with a welder from below and then filed smooth but if your finding other places with a lot of wear..........scrap it. Junk yard distributors i good shape are not hard to find.

And I was getting pumped up to do the timing chain .
I have a birthday coming up in August I may be able to get an early present. Or Ill sell something and spring for a better distributor. I guess I should do it right and get what I pay for ( ) and get the msd distributor huh? Is this the one to get? MSD-8365 Thanks guys, I cant wait till the truck is running all good again. I bet its going to be a world of difference. Plus my dad has mentioned getting his car back a couple times now.

Can I have the MSD module if it isn't a computer controlled setup?

I think I am going to get that msd 8365 which comes with this same module so I plan to keep this module in case I ever suspect the other module of problems. If I change my mind Ill let you know.
