The key to using that type of disc is moving around and never letting the surface get too hot. Never use a wire wheel on a hood. It'll warp in about 30 seconds. If you want to save money, you can get these for your variable speed polisher. I think I did an entire car with 2 or 3 of them. https://www.eastwood.com/cleaning-disc-7in.html Another trick is, if you can strip the top layer or two of paint with airplane paint stripper, wash off the surface, and then use the Eastwood tool or disc above. A thing to worry about blasting is, unless you go to someone who has a good reputation, the chances of warping is pretty good going that route as well. |

Re: Dustless Blasting / media blasting quote
Just got back to reading this, the SCT tool uses the same type of material that Grumpy posted. But it's over a larger area. The tool in variable speed and pretty much eats up the paint quickly.
Never use a fine grit paper to remove paint to much friction and no air circulating between the abrasive and panel . I always use 60 or down to 36 grit for initial removal.

Just for the hell of it I did the bottom of the fender on my 68 . Lapse between sanding and picture a second or two. Temp went up 8° . Speed at #3 of 6 .

SPI told me that there is no way to get your metal 100% free of the film ,he said there is just no way you can get in all the places the media blaster got to. also PPG told me that soda blasting will not remove any rust if you have rust in any area the soda will not remove it. |

Re: Dustless Blasting / media blasting quote
I got in the drill stripping wheel grumpy posted.
It seems super aggressive definitely taking a little metal with it. Maybe I am being too cautious? I know I could go over it with a less aggressive grit. The heat input is about the same as my adjustable speed buffer setup. Its interesting that the SCT tool with that same looking wheel leaves a much smoother finish and wow 8 degrees?? Its must be the drum rotation that makes all the difference. Thanks for the info/pics |

Re: Dustless Blasting / media blasting quote
Some interesting views here for sure, Liking the heat monitored thing. I would say those quotes were for exterior only? Or all sides of the panels?
When they do cars in the youtube videos you always see them just focusing on outside the vehicle. This process, for my desires, would be the entire piece, inside and out. The only other process that will strip everything would be the acid dip bath. So how can I compare an abrasive wheel in cost, to the areas I could not get into. Again sand or media blasting to get it done. |

Re: Dustless Blasting / media blasting quote
I think he's talking about stripping all surfaces, both sides, nooks and crannies

Re: Dustless Blasting / media blasting quote
That Eastwood tool is cool but I didn't want to buy one and have to order their wheels for it , Using an air side grinder with scotch pads and the 3 M wheels worked great along with the cheap sand blast set up to get all the nooks and crannies . More labor but the cheapest way to do it and have it come out clean ready for epoxy prime . If your going to take all the time and expense to paint it . Paint all of it .

Re: Dustless Blasting / media blasting quote
GO
all the way D O W N That's what matters. The easiest ways are the most expensive ways. They've always had elbow grease and it's still cheap as it ever was, still works the same. I used chemical stripper on the cab for my '67. It's been 10 years in primer with no issues from stripper residue. It's a clean metal rust free cab, but I would sandblast places like drip rail, window openings, jambs, other seams, floor, etc. When I don't want to sandblast pitted sheet metal I use a rust convertor

Re: Dustless Blasting / media blasting quote
I blast seams and use a D/A for the rest. Seems to work good for me. My powdercoat guy and I have built up a good relationship but that’s for powdercoat. He likes to blast and coat ASAP. If I was going for rotisserie show resto I’d dip the whole thing. Dipping has been around for a long time and I could be wrong but I think hydrogen embrittlement applies to something else entirely. .02$

that top link buzz what ever was recent i googled them before i posted the link. So who knows. Also I seen some work on face book for Bay City Classics in Norfolk, the guy was doing sheet metal on a 72 cab, it looked good. As soon as I finish stripping mine i am going to take it over for a estimate and see what they said

Re: Dustless Blasting / media blasting quote
Just to add to the quotes. I had a dustless blasting company give me a quote for my 73 Camaro. Trunk, fenders, hood. Outside only. $500! I don't think so!

Re: Dustless Blasting / media blasting quote
WHOA. I have seen these but honestly figured they werent worth the time!!!
Watch this youtube video on a sandblaster attachment for your pressure washer!!!!! Rips it right off. I wonder with the water if it would be safe to use on panels like hoods etc?? Any inputs? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-kUiBDNAao |

Re: Dustless Blasting / media blasting quote
Should be good for stripping paint from sheet metal. I don't know how it does on rust. He didn't put any effort into that rusted scratch. I think this is more or less what dustless sandblasting is, liquid/air media blasting

Re: Dustless Blasting / media blasting quote
Yeah I did some digging on it, you have to have a 3300 psi minimum 3 gal/min pressure washer to use it effectively. That is an expensive pressure washer! But a possible alternative.

Re: Dustless Blasting / media blasting quote
I am going to use him for the frame but the thin stuff he cant do. They have a huge sand/alum oxide blaster and dont use other less aggressive media. Did not have comfort with thin stuff and not worth the risk.
