52 Chevy Water Pump and Oil Filter?
Still working on this 52. Last week I ordered a new water pump and oil filter along with a fuel tank and some other minor parts. I ordered everything for a 52 but what I received does not match what is on the truck. I don't know if the engine is original to the truck. I'm hoping one of you knowledgeable fellows can identify what I need to order and what year the engine actually is.
An additional question for you guys about the oil canister. Should the oil drain out of the canister on its own, because it didn't. This is the # stamped on the block behind the distributor. And a casting # on the head. This is what is on the truck. This is what was sent. Oil filter in the truck. What was sent. One final thing that would get you slapped if caught these days. |

Re: 52 Chevy Water Pump and Oil Filter?
After searching a few sites I think this engine is probably a 56. The head casting # supports this but the engine # doesn't. The oil filter and water pump for a 56 look correct.

Re: 52 Chevy Water Pump and Oil Filter?
sounds about right. In '53 the higher oil pressure 235 was introduced, but your '52 would have come with the low oil pressure babbit 216. Easy way to tell on most 216's is the 2 acorn style nuts on top of the valve cover. 235's have the 4 bolts holding the outer edge of the valve cover down. There was an early 235 in '53 that still had the 2 nuts on the top of the valve cover, but you could tell by the side cover on the side of the block around the spark plugs that it was a 235.

Re: 52 Chevy Water Pump and Oil Filter?
The engine is a 235 or 261 and not a 216. Assuming will get you in hot water every time.
The quick visual is that a 216 or dipper oil 235 has a side cover that covers the side of the block and head rather than just the side of the block as the pressure oiled 235 or 21 do.

Re: 52 Chevy Water Pump and Oil Filter?
Can someone tell me about draining the filer canister. Should the oil in the canister drain back to the crank case or is there some sort of trick?

I removed the water pump and took pictures. Is this a long shaft pump that has been cut to allow it to fit properly behind the radiator/

Here are a few pics of the spare I got with my truck. Previous owner bought it Napa in '90.
