Another "what's this?"
I was looking at the wind lace retainers for the 48 and was comparing it with the 54 cab and I saw these holes in the 54.
IMG_0329 by Robert Moorman, on Flickr IMG_0328 by Robert Moorman, on Flickr Since the 48 doesn't have them, I was wondering what they are for. Since I'm converting the 48 to use the wind lace retainer like the 54, will I need them? Thanks

Re: Another "what's this?"
That is not 48 it is late 49 or later. It is the same as up though 54. If you are using the later style windlace that goes in the track that is the track you need.
It also means that you 48 cab is not an actual 48 cab. If it has the cowl vent it is probably a late 49 or a 50. 47/ early 49 had windlace held in by a metal strip that was held by screws. The photo I have of the early 49 Cab I have doesn't show that strip well and it is dark out now.

Re: Another "what's this?"
Mr48, the pictures of the holes and the windlace retainer are from the 54 cab.
I was trying to figure out what those holes were for, and if I need them in the 48, as I'm going to put the later model windlace retainers in the 48 since I do not have the original 48 style retainers and apparently they are not readily available.

Re: Another "what's this?"
I believe there is a "cab service manual" that shows them as vent holes to help pressure release when closing doors when windows are rolled up.

Re: Another "what's this?"
that seems strange as my '49 has drain / vent holes in the lower rear corners of the cab - you know - where the cabs rust out.

Re: Another "what's this?"
You should have clarified that you were using a photo of a 54 cab rather than your 48 cab when you posed the question. There are a lot of cab swap trucks around and just as many later models posing as 48's with 48 titles from when NSRA had the 48 and earlier cutoff date and at some events they checked your vehicle registration on AD trucks.
I'm thinking that that hole was for line up pins on the jig when the cab was assembled and may be a later in the line up thing. If you look at the top of your 48 door opening there should be two holes out in the flat area above the door on the 48 and at least through 51 that most likely served the same purpose. I just went out and looked at the early 49 cab I have and the 51 that is on the trailer with it and both have two holes that have no other purpose and that truthfully I never noticed before. The 51 cab doesn't have the hole in that spot in the gap between the windlace channel that I can see. That gap is where you slide the windlace into the channel in case you didn't know. I'm believing that you are correct on not finding the early style retainers new though. a few searches draw a blank including the filling station which normally shows anything that is available in the aftermarket.

Re: Another "what's this?"
Thanks. So I won't worry about the 54 holes not being on the 48.
Now to figure out how to secure the windlace retainers to the cab.
