Unhappy Help with My Carb

I have an Edelbrock 600 spreadbore carb and I'm having some trouble. There is a hole below the choke that has a vacuum to it. Am I supposted to have something in it?? I tried plugging it and it ran alot smoother BUT...! it ran rougher in about 30 minutes of driving it like this. So bad in fact that I had to unplug it to keep it from dying. I'm just a do-it-yourselfer just like most of you guys and was hoping someone out there can help me solve my problem.
