70 C10 multiple cooling questions
1. I want to swap to a fan clutch and a stock fan.
I have a 350 replacement motor no a/c car with vintage air. Shroud measures a bit more than 19 so I'm guessing I need a 18 inch fan On my El Camino I used Hayden 2705 fan clutch and the stock fan which is 3947772. It looks like that same setup would work on the truck? I searched for an hour and got to many answers. 2. Radiator is leaking at the neck. Looks to be original as it has the data tag. REPAIR OR REPLACE?? If replace, with what. |

Re: 70 C10 multiple cooling questions
The current spacer and the clutch 2705 will put the fan in about the same place it is now. I just went through this on my 69 El Camino with a 350.
It sounds like Wing It is the answer. That's what my searches found. No set answer. Figure it out. I modified XYZ to make it work. Not what I was expecting but Ill go with what I know. Thanks! |

Re: 70 C10 multiple cooling questions
My 2 cents.
First ditch the fan you have and buy a good factory GM metal 5 blade fan. That flex fan isn't worth the trouble. 2 fixing the old radiator will be fine if you can find a shop that still does it. All of them in my area have closed. New aluminum radiator off ebay are great units for less than $150.00 and keep all my classic's nice and cool. 3 row in all 3 of the trucks I have. Couldn't ask for better. The 71 has been installed for 5 years with factory ac and it runs 180* all day with ac on. Even sitting it never goes over 200*. The radiator support opening around the radiator needs to be blocked off, sealed and force the air through the radiator not around it. This is a major reason motors over heat in my opinion and why AC system don't cool good. Good luck with it.

Re: 70 C10 multiple cooling questions
My 70 C20 had a spacer when I got it. Can't remember if it was a flex fan or not. I got a clutch (normal duty), and 18" fan blades off Summit. I can look up part numbers if you need. The blades should be about half way in the shroud.
I was repairing my old brass / copper radiator for a while with solder where I could, and JB Weld where I couldn't. Worked for a while, but new leaks kept popping up. At the neck, you might be able to solder it. Ended up getting a plastic / aluminum radiator and it has been good for a couple years now. 100* heat with AC.

Re: 70 C10 multiple cooling questions
Thanks all. Like I said I just went through this on my 69 El Camino 350.
Both the C10 and El Camino had Same size spacer (1.5 inch) and fan in good location so I went with what works on it. FINGERS CROSSED. Hayden 2705 Clutch Repop 18" fan: 3947772 7 blade fan https://www.ebay.com/itm/370646306809 Stant Super Stat 180° New upper and lower hose Im still on the fence about the radiator. I'm heading to the radiator guy all the Locals use. Let's see what he says and might cost. I know I can get a champion for ~200. Thanks again for all the help. |

Re: 70 C10 multiple cooling questions
I went to the old school radiator place the hot rodders told me about.
He went over it, surprised it was a 4 core. Showed me everything that needs repair both inlet and outlet and neck. And how core was shot and all the other repairs. So he wants $275. I told him let me think about it. The Chinese are so cheap. He says if I buy the Chinese one from that internet better save the brass one, the cheap one will be leaking in a year. So I told him I want to sleep on it. He shakes my hand and say See You tomorrow 🤣 |

Re: 70 C10 multiple cooling questions
That's a good price for repairing/recoring your old one! One other consideration is that if something ever happens and your radiator gets damaged, most likely you will be able to have it soldered and permanently repaired. Where if you were to damage the aluminum one you can only get it epoxied up and hope it doesn't leak. Something that for me has never worked out to be a long term repair..

Re: 70 C10 multiple cooling questions
I faced a similar decision a few years ago. My 4-row's core was OK but there were some leaks. We talked about aluminum replacements, and in the end the shop repaired mine for $140. $275 might sound a bit high for repairs, but you'll end up with a virtually new 4-row brass radiator that will last for many years. And as noted above, it can be repaired again if necessary.

Re: 70 C10 multiple cooling questions
I think I would spend the $275 to get it repaired. The old one in my truck was 25+ years old when it started having issues.
It just looks right too. Plastic / aluminum doesn't look right in an old engine bay. You cover it up, try to ignore it.

Re: 70 C10 multiple cooling questions
My aluminum radiators are all welded no plastic at all. They run cooler to! I went from a 4 row to 3 row in all the trucks.
