Suggestions on power steering gear box.
So, I replaced ball joints, Tie rods. I then took it to get aligned. My shop said everything except the gear box was good. So, any suggestions on what box to buy? How difficult is it to replace? Its going on my 71 C20. With everything going on in the world at this time, I dont want to go top of the line. $$$$
Thank you

Re: Suggestions on power steering gear box.
I took mine to NAPA and got a refurbished box. I haven't used it yet, but I've never had a problem with NAPA parts. I think it has a.... 1 year warranty? Maybe 3, can't remember.

Re: Suggestions on power steering gear box.
It's not difficult to replace, as long as you can get the Pitman arm off. Sometimes they tend to be a bear.
It's also a good time to remove the pump and reservoir and drain and clean them.

Re: Suggestions on power steering gear box.
Get a rebuilt box for a 78 , I think the last one I got was from summit , they are quick ratio , and firm up in the center position , you keep the box it ships in and return your old "core" , all in less than $150 , and one of the best upgrades you can do . Replace the rag joint also

Re: Suggestions on power steering gear box.
You can try Red Head, they have a great reputation. You can buy a new one from them, or send them your stock one to rebuild with a quicker ratio. https://redheadsteeringgears.com/
Or you could try your hand at rebuilding it yourself. There's a great thread on it somewhere around here.

Re: Suggestions on power steering gear box.
I got a remanufactured Lares 1075 unit from Rock Auto, currently $141 w/$75 core charge. The 1075 is a 3-1/4 turn for '73 & up (?) instead of the stock 4-turn (1074). It bolted right up after I strategically dented the frame for the gear box knuckle. Over 1000 miles with no troubles.

Re: Suggestions on power steering gear box.
I spoke with the guys at RedHead. They actually make a good reman unit. Of course they wish to be paid for their services.
I have heard nothing but good things. |

Re: Suggestions on power steering gear box.
Got mine from Redhead. With a new pitman arm installed with the box it works great and much tighter than its been for years. Would recommend them to anyone. Service was great. Had it in my hands within two days. Quick refund on the return of the core.

Re: Suggestions on power steering gear box.
I just completed the Power steering gear box instal. It took me about 2.5 hours. I ended up replacing the rag joint also. here is the part number for the gear box that I used. You will need to loosen the bolt on the upper drive shaft so it can move back against the spring when you pull your drag link off.
It took me about 30 minutes to fit everything back together. What I ended up having to do was only put the bottom right bolt to the steering box in so I could move it into place to hook the rag joint back up to the splines on the gear box. once I had it on I put the other 3 bolts in. All the slop in my steering is now gone. So of the other guys on the forum were a great help when I was doing mine. I will end up going with U-joints on my drive shaft eventually. With the borgenson steering shaft and ujoints it will be much easier if I ever have to take it apart again. Make sure you mark the orientation also of everything or its a pain in the ass to put back together. Also, the gear box spline is a 13/16 36 spline. I have a 1972 GMC K2500 On a side note I did also have to replace my power steering hose, it was pretty cheap but my new steering box needed o rings around the power steering hose fitting, my old one was just metal on metal which I learned is how they came back then. I cant remember the proper name for that kind of fitting. Good luck. NAPA 39-1083 |

Re: Suggestions on power steering gear box.
I appreciate everyone's response. I will hopefully be doing the replacement soon. All depends on what happens here in PA with the Coronavirus.
