coolant flush
I just flushed my coolant and I was wondering how do I know if I got all the old stuff out? Does running hose water through the engine get out coolant in the heater core?

Prestone flush kit ties into the heater hoses to flush them and the engine. If you didn't go through the heater hoses for flushing, you may and then again, you may not, have gotten all of it.

After I flush the radiator I run the hose into the block and run water while the engine is running until it comes out clear then you know you got all the old stuff out and can reconnect your hoses.

I would remove the gooseneck, remove the thermostat, install gooseneck (even without gasket), flush, then replace thermostat and gasket when finished flushing.

if you had your heater turned on, so that the heater control valve was open,
it should have flushed it out, just my opinion.

When you get ALL the old coolant out use a trick my Dad taught me probably 20 years ago already.
DO NOT mix your coolant when you are re-filling after a flush like this. You have a small amount pure water in the system. Fill 1/2 the amount required with pure antifreeze, then fill the rest up with pure water. If you refill 50/50 from the get go you'll end up with a diluted mixture because of the water remaining in the block. Distilled water is best too.

What ever you do, DON'T use any caned FLUSH to clean out the block. A motor that old will surely have problems if you run any cleaner through it. Most likely, head gaskets or intake gaskets. Its best to just flush with clean water and do it several times. Just my 2 cents worth
