Power Steering: Removal And Adding
OK,
I need to take the power steering gear box of my other truck and switch it to my project. I need to find the pump also. Both 68's so it will fit. What do I need to take apart or remove before I can get to taking off the p.s. gear box? I'll be seeing my truck today when I get into town, just want to have a little info before I start. Any tech tips on the issue, like adjusting or anything. Any springs or anything that might fly at me and puncture my eye that I should know about?

It's a straight swap but be ready for the power steering gear box - it is pretty heavy and ackward to handle.
Probably want to drain the power steering pump first. Assuming it is mounted like on my 69, pop your power steering belt off, then I would first remove the bolt from the bracket attached to the motor mount and then the bolt from the bracket attached to the front of the motor. You will probably also need to swap over your pulleys. If I remember right there is a 12 point bolt in the center of the pulley and maybe three additional bolts on the pulley. Then, disconnect the steering shaft from the gear box and then there are 4 bolts holding the power steering box. Again, it is heavy so watch out. Seems like there are only 3 bolts on the manual steering box. That should be about all there is to it. I did have a bit of trouble getting to the bolt on the motor mount. I used a small grinding stone to make a little more room for the wrench by grinding a touch of the motor mount bracket off. Also seems like I had to slightly move the hard brake line next to the frame to get at one of the nuts on the power steering box.

There's really not much to it. You'll need a puller to get the cross-link off of the pitman arm, and if possible, remove with the pump still attached to the box, so you won't lose any fluid.

No need to pull the pitman arm from the box. Leave it on there since it is the correct one for a power steering truck.
And in case you didn't notice, those boxes are heavy and very capable of doing a number on your hand, head and any other appendage that gets in the way. Don't toss anything from the old truck until you've got the new one up and running. You never know if the drag link might be slightly different (shouldn't be but you never know).

I went through 3 pumps before I found one where the pulleys lined up, so make sure you get the right pump, I could not belive how many different pumps GM made.

Luckily.........
The pump is from the same engine I overhauled, and that engine I took from my 'parts truck' and put in my current project. SO I know it fits...thanks for the info though!!!!!!!! I just haven't gone around to change the power steering to the other truck!!!

I hope your parts truck still has the rag joint on the intermediate shaft. They are different for power vs manual.
