72 c10 door lock question
I have a 72 c10 and the drivers door has never locked with a key since I’ve owned it. I can lock it from the inside and it will unlock perfect from the outside with a key. I removed the door panel to take a better look. I can reach in and move the horseshoe looking piece by hand and it locks and unlocks perfectly with no binding. I removed the lock cylinder from the door and the prawl moves like it should with the key but with the key removed I can move the prawl by hand I’m thinking it shouldn’t and this is my problem. Any help would be appreciated.

Good question, curious to know the answer as well before I decide to replace mine.

The lock pawl may not be turning to the unlock position. When you insert the key the lock cylinder should turn 90º to the right and 90º to the left from that position. In some cases the spring and tumbler cover comes loose and prevents the cylinder from turning one direction or the other.. The lock pawl is supposed to turn back and forth a certain amount without the key inserted. See if the key turns 90º each way from center first. LockDoc

The key will only turn to the right from 12 to 3 o’clock .

Re: 72 c10 door lock question
That means that the cover has come loose inside the lock. The lock cylinder will have to be disassembled and the cover re-staked to fix the problem. if you have a locksmith in your area that specializes in automotive work he should be able to do that. If not I can do it for you if you want to send it to me. The cost would be $12.50 plus $3.00 postage back to you. LockDoc
