Although I like the idea of only having to cut and patch in front of the wheel well, I think they look a little tail heavy without taking a little off the back also.
We have to take off the 12" in the front, so maybe only 6" off the back would make it a 6'-6" bed.

Anyone have any links to 'how to' videos for shortening a fleetside?

Not trying to hijack this thread but I wonder what a 7 foot stepside bed would look like?

Re: Shortening a long bed fleet to 7 foot question

I found this on Craigslist.
It's a company that shortens beds.
I would imagine they do other stuff too.

Re: Shortening a long bed fleet to 7 foot question

I'm still considering doing a 7 foot bed, but I guess I never really noticed before that the shortbed isn't a 6 foot bed, but rather it's a 6 foot 6 inch bed. So, if it goes from 78 inches to 98 inches, an 88 inch bed would be splitting the difference.

Re: Shortening a long bed fleet to 7 foot question

I would like to see a long bed cut down behind the wheel by 8" or 12" basically a "bobbed" version. This would leave the frame and wheelbase in tact, which would be a lot less expensive. I started a thread on it a while back and there were few responses. I personally don't like the huge overhang of any long bed.

There is one like that in these forums somewhere. I'll see if I can find it.

The more I look at ol'skool's, the more I like it.
Comparing the two, the shortbed looks stubby.

12 inches off the front portion of the bed only - none off the rear portion.

Re: Shortening a long bed fleet to 7 foot question

ALERT-Unpopular opinion time.

Long beds look better and if your going to shorten it go to normal length short bed so a cap, tonneau cover etc fit. Years ago there was guy in my area that took all the length out from behind the wheelwells on a 67-72 so he didnt have to cut down the frame\brake lines\ driveshaft etc, it looked odd at first but kinda got used to it after seeing it few times.
