My new 70
I was able to pick up this 1970 CST a couple of weeks ago. Its got posi, 350, set up for air conditioning (doesn't work), power brakes, power steering.
Here are a couple of pics. Any suggestions on a first mod?

That's a great looking truck. I say just do some detail work on it until you figure out what you want to do with it. Cleaning up the engine, etc. The small things always add up.

While I have no qualms about modifying a rusty or a work truck, (as I'm doing now), IMO that truck appears too nice and stock to be modified. I think I would just do the things that would bring it back to showroom, including getting the A/C working. If you want to drastically modify one, why not look for a project truck that someone has quit on? They usually go cheap and some of the work done may be just what you want.

first mod? you really gonna let us spend your money??
first thing i would do is get some simple green and go to town underneath the hood. how long has it been since it has had a tuneup and change of fluids/filters/etc? truck looks pretty good overall, i'd look for any potential future problem areas and start trying to figure out what's up with the ac, etc. good find!

You guys are right, It is too close to stock to be fooled with.
The engine runs Great. Is there a book on how to troubleshoot AC probs, or should I take it to a professional?

my thoughts, first seeing that truck, wax and buff it, and some clean up, very nice truck, i would do the radiator tho, and maybe one mod, the altenator, to an internal regulated one, beside that id leave it alone

Looks good. Clean it up and detail those things that need it. There seems to be a nice carbon build-up in the spacer on the carburetor. Looks like the carburetor isn't stock, like it's an AFB or Edelbrock 1405-type. Is that carbon from some oil that is being re-routed to be "burned"?
As for your A/C question, there are books, but you also need tools. If you know someone who is savvy about A/C, talk to them. I suspect that your system is like mine: the compressor needs to be rebuilt, the dryer needs to be replaced; then, pull a vacuum and recharge the system with refrigerant and oil. Also, make sure all the vacuum hoses are in good shape and that the vacuum reservoir (black plastic ball-lookin' thing) is good. Check the vacuum-operated water control valve for the heating system, too. You should get a shop manual, if you don't already have one. But, you have a nice truck, for sure.

Nice truck,
I just got a 70 swb 4x4 myself. It's right in line with yours as far as "stock" condition goes. Motor and drive train all original. My game plan is the same as what's being recommened to you on the post...keep it stock, fix the small stuff, polish it up and drive it I just finished going through some if it, plugs (really bad), oil (really bad) and the radiator too, (had to be soldered) but with only 52,600 original miles it's pretty solid and drives out really well. Mines been sitting for three years though yours may not be quit so "stiff" Great truck, good luck! 1970's a good year. |

If you plan on keeping the truck for some time, then do it right, take it to an A/C specialist. DON'T listen to buddies or relatives that tell you that all it needs is some freon and a belt. Replace the hoses, dryer & vacuum lines (They are 34 years old, you know) & have it flushed and converted to R-134 by someone knowledgeable--flushing is mandatory even if some will tell you it's not--you want it work longer than a week don't you?
Don't even think about adding R-12, It's gotten way too expensive. This will be costly ($400-$500??) but worth it in the long run.

Wow. I honestly can't believe the responses are in favor of keeping it relatively stock. Does that mean my small voice has turned into a loud chorus? Or could it have been the voice of the majority after all which was being drowned out by an even more vocal minority? Irregardless, the responses are refreshing to see.
Regarding the truck, nice survivor. Since you asked, if it were mine I'd freshen it up, put on a set of correct mirrors and OE steel wheels and full wheelcovers, and HEI. But then again, even if it were a thrashed truck begging for a makeover, my choice would be to return it to near-stock anyway.

Another good idea or two... Take out a rubber mallet and a creeper, then start thumping around underneath your truck, it's a good way to find any rattles. Next go from one end to the other again underneath your truck and tighten EVERYTHING you can find to tighten. I say this because I just did exactly those two things and was surprised how many things I found that I was able to turn and tighten. Stuff I found loose/rattling: front bumber bolts, grill, steering box, oil pan, tranny pan, exhaust pipe<rattle and tranny mount all took a turn or two! Top mount of rear shock was just plain loose. |

Believe somone's put HEI on it. Don't recognize that carburetor tho-----? That plug wiring REALLY sucks! Get some '75 Corvette plug wires--they'll fit properly.

Very sharp truck!
vtblazer has very good advise. In addition, make sure your brake lines are reliable and aren't falling apart (especially the rubber but the metal lines could be suspect too) and make sure you're wheel lugs are in good shape. My truck apparently came with loose wheel lugs because I lost a wheel while driving - you don't want to do that! |
