Rear Drum and brakes

Good morning. I did some searching and couldn't find an existing thread that has the information I am looking for. In my introduction thread I mentioned that recently purchased a 1965 c20 that had brake problems. I have rebuilt the brakes and I am about to re-install the drums. Is there anything I should do before hand? Such as with the bearings or anything. Also, are there any torque specs for the lug nuts and axle flange bolts? Thanks and sorry if I missed the thread where this was discussed. I also apologize if I am getting any terminology incorrect.

The best investment you can make is a copy of the factory repair manual. All the usual vendors sell reproductions in either paper or CD. Most all the info you will ever need.

As far as replacing bearings, unless you see gear oil leaking onto the brake drums, don't touch them. Torque specs for every fastener are in the files in the attached link. HTH

I apologize for bring up my old thread. I am getting back to working on the truck after I got roped into home repair. I looked over the manuals and found the following under bearing adjustment following the wheel drum installation guide:

3. Using appropriate tool, tighten the adjusting nut to
specifications, at the same time rotating hub to make
sure that all bearing surfaces are properly seated
a. J-2222-5200 and 7200 lb. axles. (Tighten adjusting nut to 55 ft. lbs. torque, then back off nut 1/8
turn to align nearest slot with short tang on nut
lock.)
Install the nut lock (align nut so that a tang of the nut
lock will engage nearest flat or slot of nut).
5. Make sure wheel turns freely, then install lock nut
and tighten to specifications. Bend tang of nut lock
over flat or slot of lock nut.
a. 5200 and 7200 lb. axles - Tighten lock nut to 175
ft. lbs. torque.
That seems like a lot of torque. When I removed spindle nuts (adjusting nut), they loosened by hand. Is this correct or did the previous owner do it wrong? Granted the manual is for a 1967 and I have a 1965.

I also found the following video Youtube Video. It shows him using the method above.

However, when you view the section of the same video Same Youtube video he easily removes them by hand also.

Any guidance on the procedure would be invaluable. Thank you.

I think its that backing off 1/8 turn that does it. I would guess that once that bearing is torqued in and seated, that it doesn't take but that wee bit to make the nut come off easily. I always give my wheel a good shake before I let the jack down too just as a precaution to look for bearing slop.
