LMFAO! And,.....on top of that, if the wrong lug nuts were installed, the lug nuts are now garbage, along with the studs as previously mentioned, AND the wheels as well. If the mating surface is damaged from having the wrong lug nuts installed, (pinching or misforming the aluminum) the wheels can not be trusted anymore and should be recycled and made into beer cans so that we can all enjoy this incident for a long time to come!!

Don't confuse the guy.

There are two styles of rims. One is hubcentric and some use the lug you pictures. Some are lug centric and lugcentric used the cone styl lug nuts he had.

Where the problem here is that mag wheels sheld be retorqued after 50-100 miles. A seccond problem peopl have is when the swich to a different rim the fail to clean the hub and bolt the rim on a uneven surface that is often rust covered. WHen the rust breaks up then the wheel is loose. You loose a few lug nuts and the wheel starts to wobble and snaps off some of the wheel studs......JUST like what your pictures show.

Check and make sure you rim isn't bent and if the lug holes are wollowed out you might not want to use that rim.

How was that confusing? I think it's very to-the-point. These are only suggestions considering the situation is not right in front of any one of us. We are trying to diagnose this problem with nothing more to go on other than some crappy pictures. We're just trying to help him be aware of every possibility. I don't think it is fair for you to knock anyone's opinion because unless you've driven over to the guy's house and looked for yourself, you may not have the answers either....which in turn may make your answer confusing. But yes, your diagnosis is another possible option

Well, I hope dinnut got his problem resolved. cdowns, I agree with you to some degree (on a previous post) that oversized (wide) rims and major offset do put extra stress on the wheel studs but this is not the problem he is having. My rims are 14" wide and my truck is a daily driver. 2 1/2 years after installing my lift, wheels & tires, I have never had a wheel stud problem and as far as I know, the wheel studs on my truck are original 67. I don't mean to single anyone out about advise given, but let's think about what we are telling someone before we post. I don't always have the money to shop and replace parts by trial and error and I'm sure others don't either.

Overall, I think that all the advise was good and gave dinnut something to think about. I wouldn't be eager however, to suggest that he needs to run a narrower wheel to solve the problem.

There is nothing like the human touch. I use my impact wrench to remove the the lugnuts, but I ALWAYS tighten then by hand.

you people with the theiven loose lugnut theory have you really looked at the pictures?? to me i see he has 7/16 studs and the holes in the rims that the studs go thru appear to be at least 11/16inch maybe 3/4inch and by using the wrong lugnuts added to by the pressure of the severe offset of the rims THAT's THE PROBLEM and the cause of the stud failure and the possiblally destroyed rims

The first thing I would do is be thankful It didn't happen while driving 55 down the highway. Then, I would probably take it to a local wheel/tire dealer and get a bit of expert advice on the situation. They probably wouldn't even charge you just to tell you what they think the problem/solution would be. Lots of good advice on the board, but you need to have someone that can look at it in person.

i think some of you guys saw the pics of dinnut's Benz...ever think that a little rougher than normal driving caused this? To me, seeing the pics of the Benz now this, I think that we are qualified to have a laugh at this situation.

When I first bought my Cragar s/s wheels, the lug nuts that came with them were for a late model Chevy truck. They were for 14-mm studs. My '72 Cheyenne has 1/2"-20's. I couldn't find any tire shops in town that had anyone that had any idea what I needed. One custom wheel store sold me some nuts that were the proper size but the "shank" was too long. I even ruined a couple of the studs by using nuts that were too long and tightened them too tight and broke the studs right off. I even considered using two washers. Really bad idea. I thought I had made a big mistake even trying to use the Cragars. I was very discouraged at that point. So I turned to e-bay. That's right, e-bay. Sounds weird but I contacted this person and asked a few questions about the lug nuts they were selling. Turns out that the seller was a custom wheel shop in Oklahoma that really knew their stuff when it came to lug nuts. After several e-mails, they were able to tell me exactly what I had to have to make the wheels fit properly. I think it cost me about $ 40.00 for the proper lug nuts. And, I had to add 7/16" spacers behind the wheels because the nuts are all too long. They don't make the 1/2"-20 nuts in the correct length for the '72 Chevy studs. I would reccommend that you contact them. They were VERY helpful and extremely knowledgable. I know they sure knew alot more than I did!

Massey's Accessory Shop, 1319 S. Robinson, Okla. City, OK 73109. Phone--405-239-2010

By the way, the pictures look like you do need what is called a "Duplex" style lug nut. See, I actually learned something about wheels through my experience. So, in a way, I guess it turned out to be a good thing (in the end)

Sorry so long, and good luck!
Hang in there!

I don't get the problem here? Dinnut knows it's all n fun, just means we all like the guy. I've had to live down alot of things in life. Some will probably be remmembered long after I'm gone, that is if anyone cares. The problem, cure, and future prevention have all been addressed. How many times have we all had to live down things similar between our buds? They wouldnt be our friends if they didn't care enough to rib us like this, come on. Lighten up a little.

Hey Dinnut,
Believe it or not, Pep Boys carries a line of Ralley/Rallie (sp?) lug nuts. I'm pretty sure they will have them.

CDOWNS... LIGHTEN UP .. IT'S A FUNNY SITUATION .. NOBODY GOT HURT. AT LEAST NO ONE IS MAKING FUN OF YOU DRIVING A FORD PINTO WAGON, OR STRATTELING A WIZZER. IF THE WAY I TYPE, OR THE CONTENT OF MY POSTS BOTHER YOU SO MUCH, WHY DON'T YOU PUT ME ON YOUR IGNORE LIST. THEN YOU'LL HAVE MORE TIME TO PLAY WITH YOUR WIZZER. BESIDES THERE WERE 37 DIFFERENT POSTS WITH POSSIBLE CAUSES FOR THIS MISHAP, & I FIGURED THE LAST THING NEEDED WAS ANOTHER OPINION OR OBSERVATION FROM A ARM CHAIR MECHANIC. SORRY DINNUT BUT IT'S STILL FUNNY... I DON'T CARE WHO YOU ARE. JOHN

2 of the studs are bent so i cant get my custom rims back on because of the tight clearances w/ the lug nuts so im going to have to get 3 new studs but might as well get all 6 while were in there. till then im going to run it with the mini spare. hehe 205/65/15s do NOT look good on these trucks. the pics i took make it look a dragster with the big and the little....

and yes the truck was only driven in my yard.... we do not have insurance, and it is not inspected so if yall are trying so its because i drive hard. how fast can i drive in my driveway.... 10mph MAX?

im goign to get the correct lug nuts all 24 of them...... and im going to fix the mismatched lugs the previous owner put on....

im no hack... and the mercedes im tryign to sell i completely replaced the stereo system and we fixed the a/c and put a new waterpump on it...

oh yeah and i thought it was hilarious the way the wheel came off. i was laughing and very upset at the same time and i was really was just driving up and down the driveway.....

I'd bet money they were loose. Maybe forgot to tighten one wheel down after a tire rotation or something... if they WERE loose you'd definately snap the studs (happened to me too). If there were loose, the added offset would be a significant factor. If they were tightned down, I'm not sure it would be such a factor.

Nice truck, by the way!
