67 Chevy C10 Rear End Upgrade
I am restoring a '67 C10 and need some help on what rear end I should use. I looking to install a 400 to 450 HP motor in the truck.
Is there any positive track rear ends that I can use from newer model truck that will bolt in? Any help would be greatly appreciated.... |

Welcome to the site, no bolt ins but, you can get a kit from many different suppliers to allow you to put a newer rear in. That is of course if you have a coil sprung rear . If it has leafs you can just ad perches and shock mounts to any rear given it is close in width. Jim

If the current rearend is a 12 bolt I would just add a posi-carrier like a Eaton or auburn...or Detroit locker... I put a stock Eaton locker in my 70 C10 truck and it has a LS with a 6L80E trans.
My k20 with a 12 bolt rear and when i rebuilt the rearend I put an Auburn locker with an LS and 4L60 on 33" tires but it is not on the road yet.. hope this helps....let us know what you do!!

As said, I'd just put a posi in the one you have now. Be careful with the length of the rear housings, the 67 housing is 1.5" narrower than say a 71-72 housing. Just for example you found one from a later model with a posi ..
Especially if you have wheels on the truck now, or if you have plans to lower it. A later model rear end might be a bit wider than what you have now. The 67-68 rear end housings are 55.5" long if you measure from the inside of one backing plate to the other side in the same spot. If you're out junk yard hopping and find one, just measure 'plate to plate' and you'll know right away. Any wider than 55.5" long your wheels will start to fit differently. (stick out more) If it's any narrower of course the opposite would apply. The 67-68 rear housings are highly desirable. I'd just convert it to 5 lug (Moser is the ticket, especially with a lot of power) and put a posi in it. For the record, the 67-69 (some 70 model trucks) the axles are 30.5" long if you measure from the end of the splines to the wheel mounting surface. late 70-72 are 31 5/16" in this same measurement. 55.5" plate to plate = 30.5" long axles 57" plate to plate = 31 5/16" long axles. The problem with just putting a posi, or some sort of locker in it with all of the power the truck will have, is the axle shafts. I've broke 2 of them just getting on it a little at a stop light with a worn out 350, and a 4 speed trans. So you need to at least put stronger axle shafts in it if you pull it apart, unless you want to bend some backing plates and brake parts with your axle shaft walking out on you.

You may need to check your housing for wreck damage or stop using all three kits when leaving the stoplightIf you were to put the Moser conversion axles[ 6 lug to 5 lug] they should be plenty strong.
I had a pair of Moser 33 spline in my Chevelle and I told people it would take 2 of my motors to break an axle. |

On the flip side as far as the axles, that's the only thing I HAVEN'T broke on a 12 bolt in my Jimmy. I broke yokes, ring gears, pinion gears, perches, covers. Just not an axles. 35" tires, lift blocks, and the granny 4 speed are all hard on rear axles.
The 9.5" 14 bolt is a good upgrade if you want to stay 6 lug. But the Gov-Lok they come with if limited slip not as effective as an Eaton posi. Honestly even with 450 hp on the street, if you don't wheel hop it you should be fine. The tires limit any real load and the auto trans I assume you will be running help protect the rear from shock loads. Put an Eaton posi in it and call it good. But if you are going 5 lug and buying axles anyhow, consider moving up to 33 spine axles and if you aren't going to corner aggressively you could add a c-clip eliminator kit.
