Shortbed Wood Floor package? Anyone?
Hey guys - having trouble nailing down a short box wood bed floor kit for my 71 GMC Fenderside 4x4. The vendors in Canada are telling me its special order and could take months.
Would anyone here know of where I could locate one that is in stock, and who is the best to go through? GMC Paul's? |

Just got my shortbed stepside kit from Mar K in Oklahoma City a few months ago. Picked up my complete bed last month. Give them a call or drop them an email.

https://bedwood.com/
https://www.mar-k.com/index.aspx Both of these have similar, American made products. Actually prefer Mar-K a little more myself.

Re: Shortbed Wood Floor package? Anyone?
With the cost of shipping you may find it easier, faster and less expensive to have a local cabinet shop in your area cut the boards for you . Here are the dimensions .

Put this "diy chevy wood bed" in the YouTube search box. There are several DIY build vids.

Re: Shortbed Wood Floor package? Anyone?
I got the dimensions off of GMC Pauls site
https://gmcpauls.com/47-72_BedWood_Info.htm I'll make mine out of hardwood. Likely maple. I've already modelled it up in 3D cad. Quote:

Re: Shortbed Wood Floor package? Anyone?
Not surprised by? Just curious...
If the plan is to paint the wood like GM did, yellow pine will work and is pretty tough. Or hardwood if preferred. I'll bet the local home store can use their panel saw to rip planks to the proper width. A router and careful use of a clamped fence could be used to make the grooves. Stainless carriage bolts are readily available. Seriously, a naturally wood be can get new wood for not a ton of money, but yes a bit of labor. Converting from one bed floor to another is a bit more involved to say the least. |

Re: Shortbed Wood Floor package? Anyone?
Your step side bed is the smallest and simplest to build. You could do that up with little more than a table saw with a dado blade, a drill press and maybe a router. Having access to a planer would be handy if you don't or can't start with finish sized lumber.

Re: Shortbed Wood Floor package? Anyone?
I intend to cut my own bedwood too, I have been collecting the woodworking tools I need and will make it according to the spec Grumpy posted. I am looking forward to it because I am a much better carpenter than a mechanic!

Re: Shortbed Wood Floor package? Anyone?
I got mine from classic parts in KC (local to me). The premium oak looks great and they mill it in their own shop on-site. Shipping to Canada would be pricey though I'm sure.

Re: Shortbed Wood Floor package? Anyone?
Did mine at a local wood shop using the measurements on GMC Paul's site. Took a few hours and ended up costing much less than the kits. I used a hard maple.

Re: Shortbed Wood Floor package? Anyone?
Per the box pictured above I clearenced the bottom of the bed wood for the head of the cairridge bolts so I didn't have to drill thru the bed wood the hold the box down.

Re: Shortbed Wood Floor package? Anyone?
Ekliptix,
As crazy as it may sound coming from a hillbilly way down in Arkansas, a significant part of my family is from the Lethbridge/Calgary area in Alberta. My grandmother was born and raised in your area. Some really nice work in this thread. If I still had access to a woodworking shop like my grandfather had when I was growing up I would have made my own as well. Probably from black walnut as that was his preferred wood for everything he made.

Re: Shortbed Wood Floor package? Anyone?
Surely someone makes a router bit for the groove profile... I used to build commercial grade cabinetry for many years and from time to time we would build things like this that we had to get custom ground router bits, wish i could remember who did them for us!

Re: Shortbed Wood Floor package? Anyone?
One of my buddies from high school has a farm, cuts his own wood and had a bunch of oak 4/4 been drying in his barn for years. We plained it down to 3/4, cut it to size, followed plans posted on this site and did the floor for my truck two years ago. I eliminated the bolts thru the floor by welding ones onto the cross members. Have a rear tank, installed the gas fill on inside of box for a cleaner look.
