New Woodgrain Applique Over Old Applique
Anyone think that I could be lazy and just place the new woodgrain sticker applique I got for the lower trim over the old stuff? Although I've repainted the truck, I've kept all the old outer trim and hardware like the bumpers and handles and it's kind of beat up. I want to replace the lower woodgrain applique because several of the panels have completely fallen off, but I'm also not chasing perfection on this job since the trim itself is not the best.
Just wondering if anyone thinks it would hold up for a few years if I just place it over the old stuff that's still on there. Not sure how the adhesive would work on the surface of the old sticker vs the aluminum underneath. It looks like the clearcoat or clear plastic outer coating of the old woodgrain sticker comes off easily enough, but that under part that has the actual woodgrain look seems like it will be a bear to get off all the way. |

I bought the tape strips and put them on my lower moldings after taking the old stickers off with a heat gun and putty knife. Looks good still after a year.

Re: New Woodgrain Applique Over Old Applique
I just did a set of those. Removed old with heat gun, then used spray carb cleaner to clean up some of the old adhesive down to bare metal. Tip: Do the longest pieces first. I did short pieces first, and ran short, and ended up having to buy a new box. Guess I wasted too much when I cut the short pieces, so when I got to the longer pieces none of the pieces were long enough without splicing and I refused to do that.

Best bet is remove all the old tape and glue residue. As mentioned do the long strips first so you won't have to splice. If you leave old tape on it will show through the new tap[e as lumps and look bad.
