rebuilding hood hindges

how can i rebuild my hood hindge are there any kits available?

I have new GM hinges and springs. Here's the parts numbers:

3911705 LH Hinge
3911706 RH Hinge
3890741 Spring (need 2, naturally)

This is a much better way to go. I understand there would be a cost difference, if we could get a "kit" to rebuild them. But, I don't think I've ever seen one.

I simply went to a local dealership and told them what I wanted. They looked up the parts numbers, ordered them, and called me to come pick them up.

The reason I did that, is that Early Classic Enterprises told me that I could still get them from GM, and for less money than they could sell them to me for. So, later I spent about $1300 with ECE when I redid my suspension. Boy, did I save money, or what??

I rebuilt a set last year for my truck. The kit came with new hinge pins and copper bushings. You will need a good sturdy vise, a BFH, a press to put the pins back in, and a band-saw to cut the pins off (they stick out the bottom if you don't). The hardest part was getting the old pins out. I used lots of "Kroil" penetrant and a big BFH with a punch. Of course, mine were rusted in solid. All-in-all, pretty easy. And well worth the effort.

I got mine from Chevy Duty here in KC. Don't remember how much but around $ 10.00, I think.

You can try mushrooming the rivets that are already there, that might fix them good enough. My Dad bought a brand new set from GM had them chromed and within a couple months they were just as good as his old ones.

Dude, it sounds like you're talking about door hinges by your description.

ChevLoRay-- Thanks for the numbers. I went into the Chevy dealers' today with those and walked out with a brand new set of hood hinges and springs for less than $160 [w/tax]. Hinges were $58 and springs were $15. Weirdest thing, the dates on the hinges looked like they built them in 4/04 and 6/04. Is GM back in production with parts for our vintage trucks?
Terry-- I'll check out Chevy Duty if the kit's for hood hinges, not door hinges. Maybe I can rebuild my old set for one of my other rigs.

They never stopped. You can still buy tons of stuff at the dealer. I buy most of my parts there. Rubber products, grilles, battery trays, rocker panels, hinges, body mounts, brackets, pulleys, the list goes on and on....

68OrangeSunshine: you're welcome, but I feel bad that they charged so much for the parts. Man, I don't remember spending but a few cents over a hundred bucks, about four years ago.

I was stationed at D-M (69-71), and have my old front tag (LZD 671) on the front of my '69. I had a '64 Bonneville convertible. Went to Quebedeux Pontiac and got a dealer license frame...still got it, too.

"Prices slightly higher west of the Rockies." 1971 was the year I moved to Tucson. I was in the Marines, after North Carolina and the WestPac (Iwakuni, Japan) I was stationed at MCAS Yuma. What a garden spot. I used to drive to Tucson on weekends to cool off!
