1972 4x4 K-Vin was it born a 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton ???
I just bought a 1072 Chevy 4x4 long bed with 3/4 ton axles built 454 & Turbo 400 trans.
The guy I bought it from knew very little about the history of the truck, but he said he thought it was a 1/2 ton truck that a previous owner had put 3/4 ton axles on (PS... I know that is not a 72 grill, it also has a GMC hood and tail gate... so like most of these trucks it has a history LOL ;-)

Re: 1972 4x4 K-Vin was it born a 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton ???
It is listed on the title as a 1972
Could it have been built in late 71 and sold new as a 72 ? Title does not say 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton, but does say year first sold as 1972. And unladen weight as 4360 I am registering it today, and I imagine if I were to dispute the year it may open a whole can of worms at the MVD.

Re: 1972 4x4 K-Vin was it born a 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton ???
I would let it go as much as possible with dmv. Post a pic of the vin plate on the drivers door jamb. That can tell us a lot. Sometimes these trucks were built as say a 71 In your case but not sold until say 72 and noted as such in the title. To answer your question if it was built after July-ish of 71, than the vin will note it as a ‘72 model year. PM me your full vin and I can get you a very very close original build date. That’s not a huge deal as long as the vin is correct on the title. Verify that the vin tag, spid label if present, and frame vin all match. The frame vin on a 71 will be under the cab on the top of the drivers frame rail and also down near the power steering pump on the top of the frame rail. It will be a partial vin. Also make sure that the vin tag has the correct rosette or “star” rivets holding it to the cab. If all these match and the vin on the title matches it’s about as legit as it’s going to get.
Other Than all that, Nice truck! 3/4 ton axles are a plus in my opinion. Long bed K10 and all K20 use the same frame so the only difference between the two is springs and axles. That truck has had a bit of work done to it, there were no factory big block 4x4 67-72’s. Looks like it was loved on pretty good in the past though.

Re: 1972 4x4 K-Vin was it born a 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton ???
Are you reading your VIN from the metal plate or SPID? Metal plate matters most. It's clearly a 71 VIN - has 71 MY and is missing the leading "C" of a 72 VIN.
Do your doors have the wing vent screw? Could be a 71 K10 cab swap onto a K20 chassis. Does the title match the metal VIN plate perfectly? Does the metal VIN tag have rosette rivets? |

I agree the 3/4 axles are a big plus, engine trans transfer case were all freshly rebuilt, The whole truck is super clean top and bottom. All spring lift with no blocks, and it rides good, Posi rear end, I dont know what gears are in it yet, but it can roast those 35"s

It’s a great looking truck, I personally wouldn’t sweat the title stuff to much as long as all the vin numbers match in all the right places. It’s easy enough for someone in a DMV office to type the wrong year or similar on the title. Hopefully you guys don’t have vin inspections. That’s always a pain in the ass. We have them on out of state vehicles here and I hate having it done.
