OH MAN I wanna blow my truck up!

Normally Im patient, Im mechanically inclined, i.e. rebuild my own motors, swap/set up posi units in pegleg rearends etc, etc, but this fricken steering box has got me so pissed. The damn box was leaking at the shaft where the pitman arm attaches, so I go out to napa get the seal kit just for the lower end, remove the pitman arm, lock ring, and Ive spent 2 hrs trying to get the seals out, I poped the cover on top of the box, push the shaft up from the bottom a inch or 2 thinking the seals would slide off........NOPE.
Napa told me to turn the steering wheel from lock to lock and the seals would come out, that didnt work, what the heck am I doing wrong?? Do I need to pull the shaft completely out from the top, there were'nt any instructions in the box when I got home, and everythings closed now

I use a small sheetmetal screw driven into the seal(maybe 2) then pry out seal using the screws. Brian

Its been posted before, but try starting the truck with the pitman arm off and turn the steering wheel. The pressure is supposed to push the seals out.

I did mine last year and took them out the hard way using a bent tip scribe and screw drivers, anything I could think of actually. Good luck.

Yep, put a drain pan under it, start the truck and turn the wheel back and forth. Pop, splash, drip.

Never fails.

Guyryan100.......... nothing I like better than someone with a sense of humor...lol, thats funnier than ****

Tx Firefighter....... I drove the truck around town today with the pitman arm about half way bolted down, whohoo........man was that think a joy to drive, it was all over the road, and the funny thing is, they never poped out with no snap ring at all......craziest thing

hgs_notes & 64fleetside......I think I'll try these methods, before I get the C-4

I just take the pitman arm completely off, remove snap ring, start engine and turn the wheel lock to lock until it pops out.

Never seen it fail yet, and I think I have changed that seal on every postal truck in North Texas. Well, it seems that way, but a few hundred of them at least.

Tx firefighter......I tried that for an hour plus, and they would'nt come out, so I resorted to putting some screws in the seals, and still pry'd on them for 30 minutes, they did finally come out. I checked the bore to see if they're was any rusting, pitting, or some reason why the problem, but the bore was shiny smooth. slid the new seals and washers with ease, and no leaky
