66 dash color code question

Does anybody know the correct Tcp global color code for a 66 dash? From what I could gather from looking through the info on this site, the color should be dark fawn. However, when I ordered this color from Tcp global the color is much much lighter than my original dash. You can see the difference here in a spot that was under the gauge cluster bezel, which was not subjected to the sun. The color was #22716 Dk Fawn (Flat). I like the fact that it is flat, but I don't like the color. I also struck out with the light fawn # 22569 (60% gloss), which was a beige color with no metalic. My original color is silver metalic with a hint of gold. I had heard that that the 66 chevy trucks were painted dark fawn on the dash and light fawn everywhere else. I must have gotten the numbers wrong somehow. This has been an expensive and time consuming mistake. I hate buying paint over the phone.

Re: 66 dash color code question

A good match for the lighter fawn color is '03 Nissan Sunlit Sand, code EVO. I have a good sample of the darker fawn on the inside of my glovebox lid, I can take it to a local paint store to have it scanned for a code soon.

Here are a couple pics of the Nissan color in a '65 I restored. I used basecoat with no clear. Mix ratio was 50% reducer, then added 15% hardener to that amount. You may have to add more or less hardener to get the exact sheen you want.

Re: 66 dash color code question

But he needs the 66 color, which is completely different.

Thanks for this info, but it looks like the truck in the pictures has a much lighter colored dash. Since it is a 65, I probably have a whole quart of paint that will match your dash from TCP Global. My dash is like a bronze/brown color. Below are a few pictures that show the pertinent TCP chart information for GM interior colors (first two pics) and also a dupont chart I found somewhere on the internet (last pic). When I compare these TCP charts to my dash, it seems like the Dark Saddle Poly 22685 or the Midnight Fawn Poly 22533 is the closest match. But as the chart says, the midnight Fawn Poly was not used on Chevys. And I had always heard that only the fawns, not the saddles, were used in 1966. Also in the following post by Tony at 456 suggests that the fawns and Saddles are the same. One thing I can tell you, is that for 1966, the numbers Tony gives do not result in the correct paint colors using TCP Global. The dark Fawn was too light and the light Fawn was way too light and did not have any metalic.

(Post from tony at 456)
Medium Fawn: 60% gloss
DuPont: #9171-L
Ditzler: #DL-22571
Rinshed-Mason: #65B84

Dark Fawn: 0% Gloss
DuPont: #9202-L
Ditzler: #DIA 22568

Light Fawn: 60% gloss
DuPont: #9170-L
Ditzler: #DL22569

Medium Saddle: 60% gloss
DuPont: #4626-L
Ditzler: #DL-22570
Rinshed-Mason: #65B83

Dark Saddle: 0% Gloss
DuPont: #9199-L
Ditzler: #DIA-13010

The Saddles are from 1965 and the Fawns are the same for 1965 and 1966.

In 1966, the interior was two colors, with the Medium Fawn or Dark Fawn on the dash panel & steering column, with Light Fawn on all other interior surfaces.
(End Post)
_________
If anybody can shed some light on these two colors for 66, I would be very appreciative. This is driving me crazy. Also, I did try to get a color match from by glove box lid at PPG and they were stumped, which probably means they just didn't want to screw with this for a pint of paint.

Re: 66 dash color code question

Did you ever find a close color match for the 1966 dash?

I think I found the best match possible, and it might even be the exact paint code, althought finding it ended up being an expensive proposition. I won't bore you with the details, but suffice it to say the TCP color charts were essentially worthless on both interior cab and dash color.

For my dash I used Restoration Shop: Dark Fawn Poly Sued Flat, code: AU-TCP 22743 (C) Acrylic Urethane. In the data sheet for interior colors for 1966 trucks, this color is listed just as Fawn Poly. To make matters worse, TCP also has color charts that list dark Fawn, but the ones I tried did not match. This paint had more gloss than I thought the original had, so I dulled it down with One Chioce Matting Agent at a ratio of 2 parts matting agent to 4 parts paint, 1 part hardener, and 3/4 parts reducer. The results are a very flat finish. If you end up ordering this paint, make sure you do test panels before painting. Experiment with how much matting agent to use. Your paint may come from TCP flatter than mine because I asked for semi-gloss. I thought this paint would match my cab, not my dash. I guess this is becoming a long story!

For my interior (if you are interested), I was never able to get a match from TCP, so I ended up having PPG mix me a custom color in Shopline Acrylic Urethane. This color started with Toyota, Sleek Ecru, Brand Code: 925450, Main Layer: 925450, OEM Code: 4U7, To this I had them add 45 parts or J72 (Bright Metallic). Then, before I sprayed it. I dulled it down with Matting Agent to a ratio of 1 part matting agent to 4 parts paint, 1 part hardener, and 3/4 parts reducer. I turned out to be a perfect match to my original paint (in my opinion).

Here are some pics of the dash color. The first two pictures are of a NOS heater control with unfadded original paint that someone posted on this forum.

The second two pics are of my heater control painted with the mix I mentioned above. One shows the match between my original unpainted plastic AC vent and the new paint. I am not going to paint the AC vent.

The last Pic shows my dash freshly painted.

Thanks for sharing your paint info Metalaroundstone. That does look very nice and a very close if not perfect match.

Re: 66 dash color code question

Looks perfect. Curious though, I couldn't located code AU-TCP 22743 for that dark fawn. Maybe it's just not listed on the TCP site?

Here is a link:http://images.tcpglobal.com/chips/19...truck-pg02.jpg

If this doesn't work, go to the TCP color library, type in 1966, type in Chevrolettruck, click on page 2 of data charts, and then scroll down to "1966 Chevy Truck and Chevy "G" Van interior colors." Light Fawn is on the list. No color sample is provided. I have attached a pic of part of the data sheet showing the color name and number. None of this really makes sense, but this color is an extreamly close match. And even though it is listed here as light fawn, the can came with a label for Dark Fawn Poly Sued Flat. I also tried the Dark Fawn Poly (22716) from the 1966 GMinterior portion of the Color Library (which has color swatches) but this color was too light.

Re: 66 dash color code question

I painted my 66 dash with paint from TCP and I have the can right in front of me.
This is what the label says;

AU-TCP22568(C) Job SPRAY CARD
1965 GM DK FA

1968 GM MED DARK FAWN SUEDE FLAT
MC: WOA3363
INTERIOR COLOR
DuPONT #9202-LH BOOK.

I used acrylic urethane and it worked great. Pretty well matches whats underneath of the dash which hasn't seen any sun. Hope someone finds this useful.

For my interior I used this;

TCP22121 1963 Oldsmobile Sahara Mist.

It's not an exact match but it's pretty close and it looks good.

I got these numbers after several email exchanges from someone in the TCP mixing room.

Could you post some pictures of your dash and cab?

Re: 66 dash color code question

It was really hard for me to get the lighting right for an accurate color depiction but well try these two. To me the dash color looks the same as the above posters pictures but your eyes may differ.

Looks great. Did you have to use any matting agent on the dash?

Re: 66 dash color code question

No matting agent. It has a "suede" finish. Sprays flat kind of like a basecoat. Check the can label that I posted above. Notice the reflection in the roof picture? I painted it myself so I'm kinda proud of that

I didn't have my shop spray ready so I jumped inside and shut the doors and started spraying. It was an adventure I'll tell ya what.

Going to bounce this to the top as I was searching for the codes.

@Steve66 Did you paint the doors in the same Sahara Mist and if you did would you have any pictures to hand?

Thanks!
