WTB 70 6 lug axle shafts
My 70 GMC has the long (31-1/2") axle shafts with 6 lugs. The bearing surface on the axles are badly worn, and I'd like to replace them. I can find new axles, but they all seem to be 1/2" studs, while mine has the original 7/16" studs. Don't really want to have different size lug nuts front and back. Anybody on here do a 5 lug conversion and still have their good condition 6 lug axles?

I have a set.
Not sure how good the axles are. I can send you some pictures.

Re: WTB 70 6 lug axle shafts
I checked mine on the bearing surface with calipers and the measured 1.616”
31-1/2” long axles. I think shipping will kill the deal.

Re: WTB 70 6 lug axle shafts
Thanks Keith. I will have to measure mine to what size they are at. I did measure them already, but only remember the difference between the worn and unworn bearing surface. You might be right on shipping, too. Zip is 49756 if you want to check cost.

Re: WTB 70 6 lug axle shafts
I thought those were a direct fit, but all of them I've found have 1/2" studs. Has anybody found or are aware of any 7/16-20 studs that could be swapped into these axles? Haven't had any luck finding any yet.

Re: WTB 70 6 lug axle shafts
I am in the middle of rebuilding a 1970 12-bolt rear axle assembly. I saw your post earlier this morning, and it got me worried. I've been waiting for some Moser 14071750 axle shafts to arrive from Summit. I spent the last couple of hours looking online for a 7/16 stud with a .530 knurl, but like you I couldn't find any. As chance would have it, FedEx just delivered the axle shafts half an hour ago, so I measured the stud holes, and they are actually the correct size for 7/16 studs. There is a question on Summit about the stud size, and there is a "Product Expert" comment that says these axles are for 1/2 studs, but that is not correct. I installed a Dorman 610-186 7/16-20 stud and it pressed in perfectly.

Re: WTB 70 6 lug axle shafts
I thought the 73-87 1/2-ton 4x4 axles used 7/16” studs also.
Am I wrong?

Re: WTB 70 6 lug axle shafts
The only 1/2” stud 71-87 axles are the 5x5 pattern axles.

Re: WTB 70 6 lug axle shafts
For me, it was just a question of what size the studs were on reproduction axles.

Re: WTB 70 6 lug axle shafts
Well fellows I guess I need to apologize for the runaround. I had tried to find the stud size of the replacement axles, and like pjmoreland the only reference I found was Summit's "expert" claiming they were 1/2" studs. I had a question into Moser asking about the stud size, but still haven't received a response. Guess I will go ahead and get new axles ordered up from Summit, and a special thanks to lolife99 for all of your help.

Re: WTB 70 6 lug axle shafts
67 axles will be shorter than the one year only 1970 6-lug axles.
