Clutch pedal height adjustment

So I put a new clutch in my 67 gmc c15 straight 6 3 speed and I have to adjust the pedal which is higher than brake pedal.
I found an adjust Bolt with a big rubber bumper on it but it doesn't line up with pedal that great. I Checked my Haynes manual witch shows and tells nothing of substance. Does anyone have a picture of what the stock clutch adjuster/ bumber looks like and where I might find one ?

There is not really any adjustment for pedal height.. for the clutch adjustment you adjust for free play. That is from the pedal at rest to where you feel it start to push the pressure plate to release. That adjustment is usually 1-1/2''. DO NOT adjust the pedal height on the brake pedal----you will run out of threads on the rod and the linkage may come apart at a most in opportune time. It happened to a guy I know and he almost ended up in a river. Fortunately he only ended up through a fence and into a side yard.

The issue om noticing is with the clutch spring , the thrower bearing is all the way back. It doesn't seem to be getting enough pedal to push clutch in . Right now I can push clutch down with 2 fingers. Bearing is facing correct way and clutch is the same as old one .

Have you adjusted the pushrod between the z-bar and the clutch fork? That is where you adjust the free play.

There is no adjustment for pedal height. At full height the pedal rests against a rubber stop that's mounted on the pedal bracket..

Are you saying the clutch doesn't release when you depress the clutch pedal all the way to the floor?? The adjustment described by kwmech is accomplished to the threaded rod attached to the throw-out bearing arm located down by the bellhousing.

As for pictures. Diagrams, pictures, descriptions and instructions are covered thoroughly in Section 7 of the service manual.. The manual is available free on several internet sites. A Google search will locate it for you..

Typically if the adjustment is way out after a clutch replacement an incorrect length throw-out bearing was used. Clutch kits are notorious for using the incorrect length bearing. GM makes three that fit and only one is correct.

Good point...........

To the OP do you have a diaphragm clutch or a 3 finger? Bearings are different and they may have gotten crossed up.


I kinda went off on a tangent with the brake pedal in my previous post. I scanned quickly over what you posted and thought you were trying to get the pedals even

The service manual said the pedals should be even and that I can adjust pedal height. I have the diaphragm clutch and the bearing is the same length as I took out. . There just seems to be to much travel on bearing with no results. I guess I'll be pulling transmission. Ugh.

There are two diaphragm finger types.
Flat and raised.
Flat takes a long tob.
Raised takes a short tob.
You might have a mismatch problem.

I sized it with old and they were same but the only way to know is pull tranny I guess

You might be able to see the finger or tob type by looking thru the fork opening in the bellhousing.
Is your linkage from the zbar to the fork all factory.

So I adjusted the pedal. And the fork rod is at the end of its adjustment but it's just barely engaging the clutch now . With the throw-out bearing all the way back, there a half to 3/4 inch gap to pressure plate fingers. I give up.

That sounds like you need a longer throw out bearing. I ran into that when I swapped from a 3 finger pressure plate to a diaphragm style pressure plate.

I made some guide pins out of long bolts to make it easier to get everything lined up

I believe I have the wider of the 2 choices for TOB.

If you have the wider(long) one then there’s a problem with your linkage.

That what I don't get .all parts are the same as came out . Doesn't make sense to me. I adjusted the pedal height to even with brake. That gave me more adjustment on Bellcrank adjuster. It is at the end of adjustment rod though. . But now the TOB just pushes barely on clutch fingers when I push pedal down . Going out to grab pics now

If you were on the outer hole on the fork you’d likely be closer.
There’s a small special nut goes in that slot.

Good to know . That nut wasn't on there. I'll look for one.. I don't know how far back the fork can travel .

Here's a link that shows all of the linkage parts you can see on the outside. The nut rides in the v-section of the outer hole of the clutch fork. There's a good chance that nut would probably get your adjustment back to normal

Found the nut on Ebay last night . Hopefully that helps. Thank you for your help.
