Glue on steering wheel?

It feels like there is glue on my steering wheel? Anyone have this problem? What did you do to fix this?

You mean the leaching of chemicals from the wheel? Oh yeah, it's pretty common. I'm sure there's a several threads on this. I scraped off the excess (mine was really bad) with a paint scraper, and then used acetone to get rid of it being sticky. I then clear coated it with a satin clear coat. It seems to have mostly worked.

Mine had this too when I bought it. I used 99% alcohol and cleaned it a few times and took care of it.

My 75 had this problem. Tried several of the scrape/chemical claimed solutions. None worked for me. End solution was replacement with a wheel from an 80's Blazer.

I sure hope adding them Squirrelling knobs on were not the reason to getaway from sticky steering wheels ,,because them knobs sure ruined a lot of steering wheels for us classic cars that people look far and wide to find a good one these days ,,,

I have a 4-spoke 2nd gen Camaro wheel from a scrapyard that was pretty nasty when I got it. I soaked it in purple power for a few days and scrubbed it.
If the OP's is the sort of rubbery material that's an option.

I have heard putting it in the dishwasher works well. I'm going to try one sometime.

Very true. I didn't open this thread till now because I didn't have any interest in a steering wheel that you glue on. Bolts seem to work best!

I believe those who say the alcohol solution took care of it. But I bet that Purple Power would do the trick. That stuff is magic juice. I use it to soak colored seat belts that you'd think were black and just spraying with a garden hose brings them back to their bright original color. I have soaked many plastic parts and some metal as well. That stuff really does the trick on any type of gunk and I have not had it do damage to anything

I do feel there is a point of no return with these wheels. I have some that are just a little tacky and I may try cleaning those up with some of the methods mentioned and see what happens.

Historically for me, the first time I feel it getting sticky I start looking for a new wheel because it seems like it isn't just a surface problem, but instead the stickiness has moved into the actual wheel material because it is porous.

I have had a couple wheels, including one in a K5 that's waiting to be worked on that there was/is no way to save. They are like sticky slime.
