Special paint

This would appear to me a Canadian GMC. Any info on that color? Sure checks all the right boxes. Wanted to share some pics. It is listed for sale on another platform currently.

Re: Special paint

Coral. 1970 gmc and built in Baltimore, so I am not sure it is part of the more famous group of pink trucks. Pretty cool SWB imo though.

Re: Special paint

I believe that color was referred to as Palomino Tan/Tahiti Coral in the 60-66 era - rare indeed in the 67-72 era. Very nice truck btw, looks great with the sandalwood interior.

Re: Special paint

Yep, Palomino Tan. It was used on '67s. My '67 project began with a Palomino Tan front clip I bought. You rarely saw a '67 and not that many 60-66s in this color. Here are the fenders

Re: Special paint

My dad had a short Grande that was pink ice coral[ Or close] with white top and center. His very close friend owned the Buick GMC place here and dad got a new truck every 6 to 12 months cause the roads were bad and he did a lot of driving to check his crops and cows. He always to the man try to get me as close as you can to tobacco juice brown so it wouldnt show as much when he spit his chew down the side of the truck. He was a no option plain type man when this loaded short Grande came in I think it may have been a older persons idea of a prank. He hated that one only kept it about three months. That truck in the post above is beautiful. Jim

Re: Special paint

So was this color available in 70 on any other GM vehicle? The presence of the special paint code means it was not an RPO available for a 70 GMC. Special Paint is 'usually' just another GM color from the same year that is not an available color option for the vehicle that wears it from the factory (usually, not always... sometimes they are special fleet color mixes, etc, but generally speaking). But I would have guessed this color wasn't available on ANY GM by 1970, so kinda curious the lineage or where else it was in the GM books by this year. Or perhaps it was the first Mary Kay truck... I do like this color a lot - but it's an acquired taste. I think the interior trim color really seals the deal.

Palamino Tan was a standard GMC only paint color offering between '62-'68. Would qualify as a special order color in later years.

Interesting paint info. How often do you see “3 speed auto trans”?

I thought it was odd to see "3spd" auto trans. In 1970 that's all there was. '69 was the last year for Powerglide.

On my '67 GMC I wasn't going to use that color because I had a red interior gathered for it. If you want to make Palomino Tan sure fire pink put it next to red. But now I am doing a black interior. I still don't think black would look good either. I'd want it parchment or sandalwood

THANK YOU factorystock - that is great info, I've always wondered how far back one could go. I kinda had in the back of my mind that you could go back a year or two, but 7 is a LOT. That is great - thanks for sharing that.

Re: Special paint

The US Gov used to (don't know if they still do) require manufacturers to make enough spare parts to allow for repairs. That requirement was for seven years, so that could explain the paint color as well.

That picture makes me cringe. I absolutely never ever put anything on my hood... Never! Not even sign a piece of paper. And of all things there's a trophy set on the hood of a show winner.

Re: Special paint

Wonder if the judge or judges at the event even knew if it has the '73-'75 hubcaps? Very much doubt it! This one deserves the correct PO3 "chromed" hubcaps.

Re: Special paint

Yep, it deserves to stick to the SPID. I prefer the 73-75 w/o the black center, personally. these caps could get detailed properly for 69-72.

We have been stuck on the color and some talk about how well optioned it is. I want to point out another special thing. This is a first year Sierra Grande. This is one place where what GMC did and what Chevy did wasn't in line with one to one trim model counterparts. The Sierra and Sierra Grande debuted two years ahead of the Cheyenne and Cheyenne Super. GMC did it different those two years, too. The Sierra Grande was not a stand alone trim level. It was an option to be added on top of the Super Custom, CST's counterpart. No YE9 code, yet. It's a Z84. Sierras were the same way

I didn’t realize that myself! You’re right, those are what it needs. I’ve really enjoyed everyone’s input on this truck. I thought it would be a good one for discussion. In my opinion, this truck was priced very reasonable at 25K, if we’re allowed to mention that here. I saved the listing, but can’t seem to find it now. I’m sure they had no trouble finding a buyer. Maybe it will surface again some day!

Right, orange GMC letters go to red letters and with satin black center. Seems odd, very few seem to bother with additional GMC detail work to transform the '73-'75 to '69-'72, but often see the Chevy gold bowtie to blue bowtie transformation. Maybe most GMC folks aren't aware of this?
