brake pedal assembly removal

I am gonna remove my brake pedal assembly outta my '71 Burb. What all is involved in this......looked up there and looks like a lot of crap to remove. I need to remove so I can install my hydroboost system. I am pretty sure I gotta pull the huge black bracket that the pedal is connected to and I believe it connects to the firewall....and I believe the studs on the outside firewall is connected to it also. Anybody got any advice and/or pics.....

The nuts that hold the master cyl on have to be removed. You should be able to just pull the master away from the firewall instead of completely removing it. You don't mention if it is manual or auto trans, or manual or power brakes and that all makes a difference. You have to drop the steering column down. I think there are two bolts that hold it to the bottom of the dash and one up under the dash. It's been quite a while since I removed one so I'm a little fuzzy on it.

Here is a picture of the bracket by itself. Only picture that I have but it shows the front bolts.

Re: brake pedal assembly removal

Do you mean you are just adding power brakes? If so, there is a mechanism that bolts to the firewall and the master/booster combo bolts to that. I used a bendix vacuum booster. Getting the rod that hooks to the brake pedal adjusted was the worst part. The bracket in your picture is exactly like mine on my '71 and I did NOT have to remove it.

The Hydroboost that DBear is installing is a completely different animal. I will post a link to an article on it in a different post.

LocDoc, yeah I have already been studying Yukon's thread....it is a real good one. The truck is auto trans. I am trying to get the pedal assembly out so I can try to use the brake pedal off the '86 model. It is a bigger pedal. Do you know how to remove the pedal off the pedal assembly?

There is a bolt on the right side of the bracket by the tube that goes through the brake pedal. You have to remove the bolt and pull (pry) the pivot tube out of the bracket. The pedal will then pull down out of the bracket.

Re: brake pedal assembly removal

That pedal mount looks very similar to the one on my 66, which is very good news!👍

Re: brake pedal assembly removal

Also, if anyone is interested in hydroboost, I found that the adapter plate from an 85 C30 was a direct fit to the firewall on my 66 GMC

Re: brake pedal assembly removal

Where can I find a replacement brake pedal assembly? The one in my truck has severely rusted master cylinder mounting studs that are severely corroded.
