Clear Coat Question

The original paint on my hood is very thin and has a small spot of exposed primer. I am wanting to clear coat it to protect the paint and give it a shine without running the risk of taking the paint off with a buffer. I have a can of RustOleum Engine Enamel Clear (#248944) sitting around. Could I use that as a clear coat on my hood? Thank you in advance for any help.

I would suggest for long term protection to buy a 2k product. A local automotive paint store should have this in a rattle can size or from Amazon USC Spray Max 2k High Gloss Clearcoat Aerosol (2 PACK), unless you have spray gun then just get a small can.

If you are clear coating a primer spot, that sounds like a temporary solution anyway. I think a rattle can would be quick and better than nothing unless you want that primer to always show long term.

I was kicking around the idea of getting Poppy’s Patina clear coat and applying that to the whole truck but haven’t decided yet. The rest of the truck looks really good after buffing/waxing. My only problem area is the thin paint on the one spot of my hood and was figuring I could clear coat just the hood to protect it from losing any more paint.

OK, so if you're wanting to preserve the patina, yes, I would agree to use a clear coat.

Good idea.

And use a 2 part clear like my67c20 suggested.

I had mixed results when I did it on a truck. The clear coat was peeling off so I removed the loose clear coat. I then scuffed up the base coat that was exposed and feather the clear coat edge. It did good for about three years but then it started to peel off again. I'm not a auto painter by trade and I didn't stay in a Holiday Inn. Good Luck

Think the OP is clearing over factory paint which has burn through . If your clear is starting to peel it's already lost its adhesion to the base paint . There is no way to stop further delamination without doing a full repaint.
