Gauge Cluster Replacement
I got a gauge cluster from Classic Instruments. The pins in the gauge cluster at 1, 2, and 12 have no use in the new gauge adapter.
Pin #1 went to the alternator Pin#2 was Y-d into the ignition switch and the other side went to the proportioning valve. Pin #12 went to a junction block in the engine bay. Since this gauge assembly came from a reputable manufacturer, I'm assuming I don't need any of these wires. I just wanted to see what everyone else's opinion was. Here are the photos as reference from my truck. |

The purpose of #1 and #12 is to go to the ammeter. If you don't have an ammeter in your new instrument cluster you won't need those wires going to your new cluster. If you have a volt meter in your new cluster, you can use one of those wires to show the voltage at the battery or voltage at the alternator, your choice.
The purpose of the tan wire #2 that goes to the ignition switch and then to the brakes is for the brake warning light. If your new cluster does not have a brake warning light, then you won't need that wire. The reason it goes to the ignition switch is because the ignition switch shorts that wire to ground temporarily when the switch is turned to start. It is a way to test that your brake warning light bulb works. |
