I have a set up installed on my 383 ( which is not running yet ) working too much! The set up that I have is off of a 98 chevy truck vortec engine. It bolted right up except for one bolt on pasagener side head. Had to redrill and tap, but it is nice. Once I get a chance to get back to work on it, I will try and get some pictures posted. I have a few I have already taken, just been out at work. Working a unit shut down

we put them on about everything we build. Usually from 92 - 96 trucks because they are mostly steel and alot easier to have plated.

Shawn,

Can you spell out a few more specifics/tips/pointers on the conversion to factory serpenting systems on earlier V8's? I'm thinking about this for our '84 305 in the '69 C10, and have these questions:

1) Short or long water pump? Is the water pump different for serpentine setups?
2) What about non-PS or non-AC trucks? Are there extra idler pulleys available for such?
3) Which bolt holes are necessary on the block/heads/manifold/etc. to accomodate the serpentine brackets?

Thanks...SSOW

Isn't the water pump reverse flow for serpentine systems?

The fan water, pump and clutch all need to be for a reverse rotation. If the factory (72) fan shroud is used the fan will need to be trimmed to fit in the opening.

Something like this? This is an engine and setup from a '98 Chevy truck, vortec 350. All of the accessories require 'adapting'. The ps pump hoses are metric, the alternator is higher amp, but not a big dea, and the ac uses R134. I'm using a factory big block shroud with the '98 clutch fan.

Did you have to get a special intake for vortec heads, or just a regular performer series intake? Why didn't you just keep the fuel injection?

You have to have a vortec specific intake for the heads since the bolt pattern is different. It's an Edelbrock Performer. I didn't keep the fuel injection due to a rather high cost. It would have been close to a couple thousand dollars by the time the harness was modded, the computer reprogrammed, high pressure fuel pump, etc. Plus, the vortec injection is plain ugly.

For a couple extra mpg, it wasn't worth it. It cranks and runs just fine as it is now.

Blue68,

I notice that's not the factory compressor. Are you using that for A/C, or just an air pump?

I'm wanting to do a similar setup on my '84 305, so I guess I'll need to drill & tap the head. Got any details (depth, threads, etc?)

Thanks...SSOW

SSOW,
I'm not sure what to tell you on the '85 305. I would think the head would have the bolt holes in the head and block. I don't know if they had the bolt hole on the side of the block for the power steering pump lower bracket.

I'd suggest mocking it up if you have the accessories already, or finding someone with a truck that will let you spend some quality time looking at bolts and location. Getting the right length bolt would be easy enough if everything else lines up and is tapped.

And yes, my plan is to use the compressor for a/c. Eventually.

I have this set-up on my 72 350. I did not drill and tap the head for the inboard upper bolt hole because my last attempt (on a differant make/application) was a miserable failure. It ran fine, no cracks after 4500 miles. I am in the process of buying a Goodwrench crate motor and want to make sure that the accessory bolt pattern in the head is correct for my brackets. GM Performance parts sells this set up (for over 5 bills)part # 12497869 page 93 of the current catalog. I contacted my local GM Performance Parts dealer to make sure this set up would fit a Goodwrench LM-1 and they said, after calling around, it would work fine using only 2 bolts. I am trying to get a verdict from a corperate GM Tech rep what year goups fit these brackets and wich bolt holes are required.
----Sams 72, How did you index the hole you drilled? Did you go through a water jacket?
====SSOW, the pump on a 91 set-up (aluminum brackets) is metric, I had to have a custom hose made ( for $20) that was metric on one side for the pump and standard on the other side for the box. Early pump will not fit due to pulley differances. Serpentine pulley is not tapered and early is. As far as non A/C trucks there is an a/c delete pulley you can find in the junkyards of the cold parts of the country, otherwise. you can buy an a/c delete pulley in the performance catologs/web pages, look Camaro. Don't know about the power steering delete pulley...But don't think available. Water Pump is reverse rotation think long. 91 c20 pump works fine at Nappa. As far as bolt hole requirements initial verdict from Daughtery Chevrolet in Sacramento is 2. 1 in passenger side, outboard upper head (same as ours) and one in lower block (where old style eng monts were). I think one is required inboard passenger head just below manifold but am awaiting responce via e-mail from GM Performance parts corperate. Will post on this thread what I find out.

Which setup is best - steel or cast?

Chickenwing,

Thanks for the info and specifics. That helps.

Ok, I've been pursuing one of our favorite hobbies, climbing through weeds and over various carcasses at the local salvage. I've located two setups I can get complete for $150 (each), including all pulleys, alt, AC, PS, etc. Neither have the air pump.

I'm not sure about the years, but the earlier one has steel brackets. All bracketry on this one bolts to the front of the engine, and it looks a little less crowded.

The later one is cast, and has a bracket for the rear of the alt that uses the front bolts of the exhaust manifold. This presents a slight problem since I'm using the mid-80's stock exhaust manifold that is a solid log and bolts underneath, so the bracket can't fit the bolt holes.

Based on this, I'm leaning toward the steel setup, unless someone knows something I don't...

Thanks...SSOW

I like the thought of the steel brackets. My cast ones have not not cracked but I wonder if they will. The steel alternator bracket you mentioned: I trimmed the exhaust manifold mount piece off. The bracket just goes from alternator to power steering pump now. Go with what blows your skirt up.
