62 Longbed dilemma
Hey all, had to put my project on hold for a bit. But know I’m full steam ahead. Originally I was going to frame swap to a 69 frame and use QA1 full suspension kit. This year during SEMA at my booth party I was convinced not to, that I should bite the bullet and go with Porterbuilt dropmembers or QA1 front member and custom build a C-notch (custom C-notch if I go QA1) My original thought was coilovers, but then thought I really don’t need that, and my wife likes the layframe look. Dropping 6k into the Porterbuilt kit will put a huge dent in my so called budget.
Are there any other options out there I’m not seeing? Any input or suggestions are appreciated. Currently building a stroked LS3, just waiting on the AFR heads to complete the engine assembly. Thinking of 4l80, or 6l80 to back it up. |

I would say I need a big notch if I want to layframe. But the Porterbuilt rear drop member doesn’t look extremely deep. So I’m unsure at the moment. I am a novice with trucks.
Nice looking truck you got there, coincidentally my first plan was to build a 408 for my truck, but my buddy at Scat convinced me to step out of my comfort zone and build a stroked LS3 instead. That was a learning experience for sure! |

How much are you willing to raise the bed floor? And/or are you still needing it as a truck (ie: carry sheets of plywood)?
I raised the bed floor on my '61 4" and made my own 4" notch, maintaining frame thickness over the axle. It won't lay frame in the rear, but I wasn't willing to give up a useable bed.

If you are a good welder you could install a later model of front cross member and pancake it. Look at the last page on this thread.
