700r4 Governor Cap Blow Out
Anyone ever have the governor cap blow off a 700r4 while driving? Lost mine at around 70mph, resulting in a K5 covered in ATF and a tow ride home. Wondering what may be the root cause of it all. Never had it happen before nor have I heard of it. Any ideas?

I'm no transmission guy but I have never had that happen to any of the 700's I have had. Isn't there a strong spring clip that holds that in? Maybe someone that knows more about it will chime in..... If you don't get any replies I will move your thread to the "Engine & Drivetrain" forum to see what happens. LockDoc

He was on the board 11/21/22. He would probably respond if a guy would send him a PM. LockDoc

Re: 700r4 Governor Cap Blow Out
From what I've read only the early 700r4's had a clip. Mine didn't have one and there are no provisions on the case for it. It sure would have been nice if it did though. I got a new cap and used some RTV on it. I'm hoping it just wasn't on there good from someone monkeying with the trans before I got it and I just didn't know it. Also hoping the short amount I had to drive it after it blew off didn't fry the trans. We shall see. Man it made a fantastic mess though.

I thought about that when I put one in the 70 stepside I had. I didn't like the arraignment.
I used a clip off a TH350. It could be your vent was plugged up & built up pressure. George |

Re: 700r4 Governor Cap Blow Out
The covers have some type of glue on them from the factory. After the covers have been used a few times they have lost some of the fit. Add a new "O" ring and some of your favorite sealer after cleaning both mating surfaces. Then reassemble with a soft faced hammer. I used to use a home made tool that pushed only on the flange, mostly because I was in a hurry. I am assuming you didn't loose the governor, out of the bore, in the process. If you lost the cover I can send you one, with the "O" ring, free gratis.

Re: 700r4 Governor Cap Blow Out
Accelo I do really appreciate the help, I didn't lose the governor and I have a spare 700r4 laying around I was able to rob the cap from. I put it on with some RTV and filled the trans back up. I lost a decent amount of fluid but it all seems to be fine now. Just don't trust it very much at the moment. Some miles will help with that though. Thank you all for the help.
