One of my trucks had a home made speedo needle so you won't be the first. I never investigated how they did it. It looked like a WD40 straw though.

I just replaced my instrument cluster with a Dakota Digital unit on my 77. PM me your address and I'll send you the needle off my old speedo if I don't destroy it removing it. My treat.
