Where to install my tach

I have a sunpro tach I already wired up to the truck and it works great, but I can't decide where to mount it, I really hate drilling holes in stuff, and thought I would just strap it to the lower part of my automatic column shift, heh, then of course when I go to shift I realize that won't work, I felt pretty dumb, so now i'm trying to figure out where to install it.

In my last truck (83 GMC high sierra) I just drilled a hole in the column and put a screw in it, I don't know if I can do that on this truck or not, so I was trying to see if anyone had a better idea.

You can mount it on the column, and if in the right spot, it won't move when you shift.

Here is the one I put in my Blazer...

I did that on my 75 but my 88 the colum shape wouldn't let me do it.

My 88 is not a hot rod I just like to know what RPM I am at when Pulling. Its mounted to the bottom lip of the dash sort of over your right chin when you foot is on the gas.

mine is an 85 and has the wiper/cruise control stalk and the column has a nice big buldge there, so it won't work.

How big is the tach? It's probably too big, but if it's small enough you could remove your ac vent/pocket and mount it there. Thats how I did mine and I love it, there is pics in my sig

Yeah, this guage is too big to mount there, I don't remember what size it is, I don't use the electric oil pressure guage anymore so if it was a small tach I could mount it in the old oil pressures spot, I might just mount it to the bottom of the dash, its not like I need to see it all the time with an automatic truck, just like to know what rpm problems occure at or what rpm I am turning in what gear and stuff.

If I remember right I bought it from JEGS, it was a pricey little sucker though around $90? Its been a while.

I decided to mount the tach using the left side screw that holds that peice of metal under the column, the screw was already long enough to go through the tach bracket and still hold the sheetmetal on, its not real easy to see but gets the job done and I didn't have to drill any holes.

has anyone installed the tach by the ash tray? would that work? what do you think of it? that is where i am thinking of putting mine there. I jsut wanted to get some advice. thanks shane

Hey, Destructo!! I'm glad the tach works well for you, but I'm sorry you can't find a place to mount it! On the 1976 Suburban (w/tilt) that it came off of, it was mounted to the lower part of the collumn and it moved with the shifter (didn't hit anywheres, either). Maybe it was just mounted in the "sweet spot" :p . There's a little bit of info about it that I forget to tell you when you bought it. PM me for details.
