Re: Grandpa's 72 restoration
Well no progress on old blue, but I did get the 56 loaded up and trailered down to my shop (in progress). It hasn't run since about 2006, 3 of the brakes were frozen up so we backed off the pads and knocked them loose. It got its first bath in many years and I even tried a test patch of Meguires #7 on the hood with fantastic results. This project will be "fix what needs fixing" and leave the rest alone, just clean it up and get it safe and enjoyable. The trucks name has always been RIP, because he has twice now slept for 20 years and been revived. Rip was bought new by my great grandpa, so my kids will be the 5th generation to enjoy this truck, I'm beyond happy.

Re: Grandpa's 72 restoration
I love the 56. My Dad had a red 57 when I was about 13 or so. He wouldn't hang on to it for me, though. I will go over and follow that build thread too.

Re: Grandpa's 72 restoration
Even though my 68 GMC is a short step side, I'm a sucker for long beds.

Re: Grandpa's 72 restoration
Finally got the '72 trailered down to my house, it has been 8 years since the truck has seen the light of day. I think it looks pretty comfortable next to it's roommate! I need to finish a few things on the new shop then it's time to get these trucks on the road.

Re: Grandpa's 72 restoration
Wow, has been a while since I last updated. Spent most of winter and spring finishing my shop but have had some time to finally get Old Blue on the road.
Recent big changes were new tires on the white steelies with chrome dog dishes. Completely rebuilt steering, I found out the gear box was shot and blew up the power steering pump. So new gear box, pump, idler, pitman, inner and out tie rods. Lastly swapped out quadrajet for Edelbrock AVS2, very happy with this carb. I'll spare all the little details about getting it running, but this truck runs great, drives and steers great, floats down the road without a single rattle, shake or pull. Smooth, quiet in cab, solid driver. Literally like a brand new truck. Need a little more fine tuning on carb and timing but this truck is basically "done". Just to enjoy and tinker on. |

Re: Grandpa's 72 restoration
Just a fabulous job overall. Well done.
I may have missed it in the thread, but may I ask what paint code you used? Is it the factory medium blue?, and did you go with a single stage? To me it looks like the original color Chevrolet used. Edit: I went to the first page and found your SPID which answered most of my questions.

Re: Grandpa's 72 restoration
Thanks guys, looking forward to many miles of smiles with this truck. Cornerstone, yes factory medium blue, 510 code. Single stage, paint and primer materials all bought through Napa, crossfire line, which is a cheaper line but I have been very happy with it. The truck looks a little dark in pics, but its a beautiful blue especially in the sunlight.
