Anyone Running HMMWV Wheels and Tires 67-72

I'm doing a 14 bolt & Dana 60 swap on the old 71 K10. I can't seem to find any pics of a 67-72 truck running HMMWV (Humvee) 37" tires and 16.5 split rims. Anyone put there got a pic? Thanks!

So, I've listed the Pros and Cons below. Anyone else have any thoughts?

Pros:
100.00 per tire and 150.00 wheel and tire, surplus of course
4 ply

Can install tires your self with split rims
Cheap to buy!!!

Cons:
Split rims are hazardous under certain conditions
These specific tires are harder than most, which isn't the best for rock crawling
Replacement tire options are limited (Brands, model)
Backspacing may be an issue

Isn't there some kind of law about having to paint your truck OD Green or Desert Tan if you run these?

I haven’t ran the HMMWV wheels, but I had a set of the Baja A/Ts on 16.5x9.75 steelies on my Burb a few years ago. They are a tough tire and I liked them. Definitely stay away from the older 36” bias plus and only go for the 37” radials.

There isn’t a danger in running the HMMWV wheels, as they aren’t a split rim (which has an inner hoop/hub, outer ring, and lock ring) but a multi piece wheel bolted together. There is no risk of the lock ring flying off when airing up like an old school split rim. The wheels are heavy, I used to keep a few for my Marines to use for tire flips during morning physical training. Assembled wheels/tires also have a run flat in them (which is a pain to remove and/or cut down). HMMWVs were the only wheeled vehicles that we didn’t build tires sets in the field because of the difficulty in removing run flats without specialized machines.

I’m actually in the market for 16.5s again, as I have a set of slots I’d like to run. This lead me to Treadwright tires, who does a remold in the 37x12.5x16.5 variety. Not too bad price wise, especially compared to Interco’s 16.5 prices.

I've seen pictures of members' 67-72 4wds in the 4wd & Off Road forum with Humvee rims. You don't have to run the hard military tires if you want to rock crawl. There is a great assortment of the best off road tires available for 16.5 rims. The lack of selections comes when looking for smaller sizes in hiway tread designs.

Unless you run dally axles or recenter the wheels they have WAY too much backspace. The 37’s are. But the 36 Wrangler II bias tire the HMMWV had originally were same size as the 35” BFG MT they replaced on my Jimmy. And they’ve been replaced again with a set of BFG 35 16,5 AT.

And as others mentioned, the Humvee rim is a bolt together two piece and NOT a split rim. Huge difference.

It's been 6 years since my last post, I've had a lot of time to gather and assemble the required parts and knowledge to do this right.

Ta da, Goodyear Wrangler 37's on Trail Worthy Fab's re-centered dual bead lock wheels with rock guards! I'm looking to put them to good use on the Rubicon this year...

Man that looks great, I’ve contemplated the surplus setup multiple times in the past but never pulled the trigger. Maybe it’s time to look into it again now that my K20 is getting ready to get the front 60.
