Inline 6 question
So, I picked up a 250 inline 6 from a buddy for nothing (along with a T-10 gearbox, bellhousing, clutchpack, starter, HEI dist, pulleys, carb, etc). I haven't fired it up, but it was supposedly a performance build. The weird thing is, the casting numbers say the block is a 250, but the heads are for a 230. Is this common with these inlines? I know next to nothing about these particular engines or tricks that are done to them...

Very common. The head interchanges between 230, 250 ,and 292 engines.
The 292 is pretty different below the head though.

I am not positive, but I believe the 230 head has a smaller combustion chamber than the 250/292 head so it will give you a higher compression ratio. It is an easy way to gain a few horsepower.

It's the 194 head that has the smaller chamber. The only difference between the 230 & 250 is the crank & pistons. Block & heads are the same.
